I think this is a great questioned raised.
In my eyes Kendrick Lamar lyrically is as nice as anyone I had ever heard in years but he has earned the right to knock on the door of the top emcee bracket with dropping a classic debut album. I don't think anyone else has made a great enough impact on hip-hop recently to mentioned among the greats.

Kendrick is beyond a breath of fresh air but people are really caught in the moment.

IMO Lupe displayed greater lyrical ability at the same point in their respective careers and Food & Liquor is just as good if not better of an album than Good Kid M.A.A.D. City.

Shortly after Lupe dropped The Cool I was certain that in five years he'd be a lock for all time elite rapper status. Turns out he hasn't produced anything of that caliber since.

Probably bc The Cool had the cohesiveness as a whole that GKMC has. Both considered concept albums and with everything tying into one another, they both flow from start to finish.


But as crazy as it seems, what ppl have said is correct, until Jay leaves the game, he is top dog. Kendrick has undoubtedly made his name w/ his debut. Cole needs a better platform to really get going imo. Out of the artists today, they are two that could have a place in hip hop for years to come. Most of these other dudes are easily forgettable once they stop dropping music

No I meant "has" and IMO GKMC was the best hip-hop debut album I have listened to since F&L. I hear your point on Lupe's last 2 albums not being strong but I still rock with him. I do think GKMC is better than F&L (retail version) as Kendricks album is more cohesive. I get what you are saying though in the fact that a debut classic doesn't necessarily equate to remaining among raps elite and I can't disagree with you on that.

However, I think that Kendrick is most likely not going to have to deal with the label pressure Lupe had to deal with after having a hit single like "Superstar".....I pray that doesn't happen because after the success of that song on The Cool, Atlantic wanted pop songs from Lupe and really feel like that he has not been in the same creative space since where we can see that cohesion throughout an album. If Kendrick doesn't have to conform or dumb down his music then I don't see why he can't continue to produce great cohesive albums.

jay is the best overall career wise right now but kendrick got better numbers in the past couple seasons
