How come some play the minimum and others put nothing in the pot?
big and small blinds, the button goes around the table

2 people no matter what have to throw in chips whether they fold or not, thats why its called blinds. so example someone has to throw in 5 worth of chips and the person to their left has to throw in 10, that pattern continues clockwise around the table. so think of it as a "fee" of some sort that everyone has to pay when the button gets to them.

I have 3 older brothers and my pops also knows how to play... so i learned from them... i have known how to play since i was like 8 haha. but my brothers never really took it serious since they were scared that my dad would beat their behinds if they gambled their money away since my dad had  gambling problem when he was younger...

me on the other hand knew i could be good at it since i played so much with my bros and they taught me alot.  Now i'm 18 and  i play in small little games with friends and sometimes enter tournaments and stuff.  my dad tells me i'm addicted but i rarely lose money so i could care less haha

i cant really give many tips that will be of good use since you already got the jist of it.  just play the right cards, dont have to play every hand and if you are pot commited then you might as well play the hand and you might get lucky haha

I learned to play when I was in 6th grade. This was in the early/mid 90's. I learned to play all different types of poker, not just "NO LIMIT TEXAS HOLD EM" I got put onto that when the WSOP was put on tv in 2003. But they best way to learn is to play, play, play. When I played w/family we played like .25 games, $1.25 max raises, a quarter for each card. When it is NOT no limit, your skills get tested more cuz u get to play more hands. I have NEVER read any poker book. You learn from playing and watching, that's it. There is no better learning method than "HANDS ON/ personal experience"

We just bought a set, studied the rules and had many nights of playing non-stop.

We had a print out of all the hands that was really good so we learnt what topped what when it came to showing your cards.

Playing online poker is totally different from real life. The hands online are ridiculous

like it makes you smh in front of your own computer screen! Anyways, I can go on and on but here are my tips. If you're a beginner then just play any decent hand and by that I mean hands that can connect to a straight but just not the nuts i.e 3/7,4/8,5/9 because those are hard to connect and even if you do, the other players might have a higher straight. So a good hand might be 6,9 or 7,8 and if they're suited then thats even better because now your chances of hitting something on the flop is even higher. A strong hand is 10/A or K/A and I advise you to bet because if you hit nothing on the flop, you can fire another bet and just play it off like you have a high pocket pair but if someone calls or re raise then its up to you.

lots and lots of house games
won a couple big casino tournaments
but still no where close to where i wannabe

you only think its ridiculous because online goes at a much faster pace.

Books depend really which type of poker your playing : cash games, sit & gos or tournaments and if your playing Holdem, which I'm assuming NL or Limit...

Books are good starting tools, but get outdated very fast, to get you started I'd recommend Harington on holdem for tournaments, also Winning Poker Tournaments One Hand at a Time Volume I & II.

Forums are a great tool... pocket5s.com & two + two forums, which I believe someone has already mentioned.

If you are very serious about it i'd recommend joining a training site : card runners (good mix of cash games & tournaments) or pokerxfactor (mostly tournaments).

If there are any players who are playing real money online and are interested I'm taking a few students who are interested in coaching, pm me for details.

GL @ the tables fellas..

Nooo, I actually play turbo on fulltilt
laugh.gif
but what I'm saying is that the turn and river are just crucial. Like this guy went all in during the first hand like someone mentioned above
laugh.gif
and I have pocket Aces so I was actually feeling gitty inside like I got this in the bag
pimp.gif
. I was hoping the other players would follow but no one else did and it turns out this guy had J,2 off suit and I was thinking this is no fun but the flop comes out J and 2 random cards and he hits a 2 in the turn and I was
mad.gif
. I'm sure I had more bad beats but then that was the most recent one.

A friend showed me the basics about 5 years ago and I've been playing ever since.

Hoping to turn it into a career in the near future.

I'm deciding whether I wanna get involved in one of these threads again.

But yeah. Play professionally. Waffle crush, etc.

Read Math of Poker by Chen and Ankenman. When you finish, read 2p2. P5s is for morons. When you get good, and if you can afford it, memoirs of aejones is absolutely ridiculously good info.

turbo just makes the blinds go up faster. lol. it has nothing to do with how many hands you see within a certain time frame. i know what you mean though. you just gotta learn to live with it. better starting hands always do better in the long run. if your game is on point you can learn to live past that.
and op i really suggest you start reading poker books to supplement your learning process. imo the lessons you learn are just as valuable as experience when it comes to poker. ive noticed my game change drastically when i started reading. i dont know if this show is still in syndication but i also learned a few things from the show learn from the pros or something like that. i used to catch it a few years back when csn was fsn during the afternoon.

IMO it actually keeps the game going or else people would be folding every hand if they could and not be betting .. This forces a play of cards, the game otherwise would be extremely boring as well.

I have been playing since the age of 7 or 8 and learned from my pops.  I have been cleaning up in small cash games for a while and games amongst friends but recently was able to talk to KingTre for some tourney advice, so I'm considering taking my game to the next level come spring/summer.
