So I havent played poker in a couple of years. I want to get back into it, mainly b/c i need a new hobby. Can someone suggest a book for some tips, or posttips here?

Consider your position, chip stack compared to others, play premium hands, and don't be afraid to raise

Obviously not all the information you need to be successful, but helpful nonetheless

-Patience
-Be aware of other players characteristics (when they bet big, fold, etc.)
-Know when to strike and definately know when to lay a hand down

Just a couple off the top of my head.

play online for free just to get used to it again and get back in the groove. (party poker... poker stars... facebook... etc.)

I wouldn't go out and spend 10-20 bucks on a book for tips.. I don't think its really worth it.

- Play the cards you have, not the ones you might get
- Inside straights are not your friend
- Learn your tells, and use them to your advantage

uhhm, im gonna need more pics of your avy SkyyPilot

He's actually a Hold'Em professional. He practically lives in Las Vegas's Golden Nugget

The most important thing about Poker is bankroll management.

If you cant manage your money, you're destined for failure, I don't care if you're skill set is on par with Stu Ungar's.

The 2nd most important thing is paying attention at ALL times so you can pick up on your opponents tendencies.

Depends on whether you are playing live or online and whether you're playing a cash game or tournament, but none the less, like others said: know whenyou're beat, a pair is the most winning hand in poker - but just because you made a pair doesn't mean you won, dont play every ace you are given - bigmistake by many players, use your position to your advantage, study the board - know what cards are there and what draws are there, when you lose do not getemotional - you will lose more - poker is a game of long-term winnings it does not make you rich over night. There's plenty more but for now this should beof aid, also check out Phil Gordons little green book and little blue book - great information on becoming a winning poker player.

"Folding is the best way to make money"

"You can't bluff bad players"

Two of the most often used quotes in poker books/training sites, etc that I have ever heard.

Go with your gut.

Don't be afraid to fold OR raise, especially if you have the cards, on the latter. There's no shame being beat with a good hand by a better hand.

Be selective.

Don't always be chasing.

Just won a game at my father in law's who hosts an annual "black friday" event....More importantly beat a lame who is socially inept.

40+ players, hell of fun.

If the blinds are small, don't just throw away chips because of it.

You can read all the books in the world but the best way to learn is by playing.

I think the best way to learn is finding a good balance between the two. Its going to cost you alot if you learn only by playing and books wonthelp much if your not able to fully understand and apply the concepts your learning.

Bumping this thread!

Anyone else still playing poker? I've been playing more and more with the online clubs/apps they have now.

you playing for real money though?

used to like those free apps but can't be taken seriously when its not real money. they need to legalize it so we can get some poker apps with real money, thats a money maker right there

Just keep folding until you're big blind, so other players can take each other out
