Few questions:

1) Guys who've had size stickers on their hats for years: Once you peel them off, what do you do to get rid of that "ring"?.

use duct tape or similar tape(sticky side) and try to peel the old sticky off #PAUSE

I would request a partial refund from them off the unnecessary long shipping time and the damages to the hat they caused. If they weren't willing to rectify the situation I would have no problem filing a credit card chargeback. That shape of the hat is unacceptable.
