Prison Reform?

I watch alot of those prison docs that come on MSNBC and NatGeo and I always wonder what can be done to rehabilitate the prisoners. Its not secret that many come back. Part of me feels like they should be able to get their GED and learn a trade maybe even a few college credits but another part of me asks why spend money on them when they have kinda been a nuisance to society.  There is the issue of private prisons which I'm sure have no intent to rehab. them cuz they would lose money and then there are the conditions on the outside that possibly led some of them to prison.

I dont have any ideas but it is something that crossed my mind when i'm watching them every weekend.

MSNCB has been showing the same episodes for like 3 years...they say a new season starts soon

A couple great threads on this from awhile back. Basically what it comes down to is the reason it stays the same is because it is BIG BUSINESS and prisons make giant companies massive amounts of money. Not gonna copy/paste pages of info all over again but they are productive doing work a normal person would make 10 bucks an hour for(tele-marketing)but getting paid pennies. It's comparable to child labor in other countries but the hours are not insane. It costs regular americans jobs but keep rich people rich. It won't change.

Private Prisons are a bad idea. The government should 100% fund prisons and for those offenders not doing a life time in jail they should offer more programs to rehabilitate and possibly try to get non-violent offenders in the armed forces.

private prisons are the worst kind of idea period. it clearly gives an incentive for more people to be locked up in a country where the rate of prisoners is growing every year.

Granted but do you really think we are in any economic condition to implement 100% government funded prisons? Thats a whole other burden that we really arent ready for right now.

What it all comes down to is that it is an extremely flawed system that for now has no chance of going through any type of change or reform. There is no cut and dry answer to this problem.
Almost any "solution" one can think of theres always about 50 reasons why it wouldnt work. Ive tried both sides of the argument for a very long time and end up with a stalemate just about every time.

Yea, I got a solution. Beat your damn kids when they do something wrong. Seriously. But, no. Prisons are not meant for rehab like it says it is. You can't change the prison system nor can you change why people go to prisons. It's all politics. Statistics show that forced rehab doesnt work relatively close to the people that actually want to change. Prisons are just meant to protect the innocent people of society. Break the social contract, you lost contact. I should copyright that @#*%.

Anytime you have any type of establishment that returns such high amounts of profit there will be corruption.
The government is not exempt from this and as long as theres a profit to be made people will always look for the good of the establishment as opposed to the good of the individual serving time.

Only way it would work is if there were 0 or very little profit to be made, that way greed wont get in the way. Once this happens though, we end up right back at square one where it becomes a burden on the taxpayers.

Prisoners should be on stationary bikes to make energy. Plus they will get exercise so they will be healthier and need less health care.

Well speaking from experience, you cant consider a person a ''nuisance to society'' just because they made a mistake that landed them in jail.

Everyone is given the chance to %#$+ up so why not have a chance to make things better for yourself after the %#$+ up?

Yes there are people who dont deserve a shot at making things right but there are also people who go to jail and learn their lesson the first time.

If the government can pay for pastors to come to the prison and teach religion,then I think everyone should be given the chance to educate themselves behind bars.
