Prison Reform?

Well speaking from experience, you cant consider a person a ''nuisance to society'' just because they made a mistake that landed them in jail.

Everyone is given the chance to %#$+ up so why not have a chance to make things better for yourself after the %#$+ up?

Yes there are people who dont deserve a shot at making things right but there are also people who go to jail and learn their lesson the first time.

If the government can pay for pastors to come to the prison and teach religion,then I think everyone should be given the chance to educate themselves behind bars.

There are essentially three reasons that explain why 90-95 percent of the people in prison are in there:

1.  Lack of viable ways into mainstream (lack of education, job skills, and employment opportunities)
2.  Drug addiction
3.  Mental illness

These three reasons stem from primarily the following things:
1.  Lack of access to quality education
2.  Lack of access to living wage employment
3.  Lack of access to regular and quality health care

Those three factors come from poverty and living in an isolated, impoverished community with terrible schools, no jobs, no mental health services, and more than enough hopelessness and desperation to go around.  So essentially, it all boils down to poverty, period.

Prison doesn't do anything to address these issues, and in fact exacerbates them in most cases.  Therefore, prison can't and won't do anything meaningful to help offenders rehabilitate because they don't address the underlying issues causing incarceration in the first place.

The way probation is set up, almost guarantees most people who serve their time go back in.

It's big money, and they need prisoners to get their big money.

federal institutions do allow you to get your ged and learn a trade because apart of their exiting program you have to go to a halfway house and have to have a job coming out. they work with other agencies to get excons jobs.

There are many programs that have been shown to be effective. The problem is no one wants to pay for them. Society as a whole is pro punishment, not reform.

One idea that I heard before is for different prisons to use inmates to make a product, grow a crop etc.  The prisons could then trade among themselves for what they need, saving tax dollars.  Inmates could then learn skills that they could use once they're released.   (I know this would open a can of worms about forced labor or something, but it sounds like a decent idea).

most prisons aren't conducive to rehabilitation, most prisoners leave in a worst state of mind, $*!% is sad.
