procedures after buying a used car from a private seller..wat to bring to DMV

We are buying my cousin's used car and was wondering what to do after we buy it... since im picking the car up 2 hours from where i live would i still have coverage from my current insurance while i drive 2 hours just to bring the car back to my house? and what would i need to do with DMV? i heard i have to pay some tax so my pops told me to tell my cousin that i bought it as a gift and lower the purchase price or something like that? thanks in advance..
