Producing/DJing: Starting From Scratch

ok, so i know there's been a few threads pertaining to producing and dj'ing, but everything is pretty scattered and it's tough searching through for information with all the soundcloud links, youtube videos, ect...so i wanted to start this new thread

since i got fired from my job, i find myself having hella free time and decided earlier ths week that i wanted to get back into music seriously...i used FL Studio's a few years back and made some pretty good beats and i know i have the ear, but i need to crystalize my talents...

i'm prepared to lock in and learn as much as possible, i'm even getting some of my kicks and gear together to sell for some equipment, but first i needed to learn the basics...i've been practicing scales and chords on my keyboard all week and am planning on learning how to play by ear (a lot of hours and )...

i need some help n learning about the different DAW's and which would be right for me...i want to be a all around producer (hip hop and electro mainly) and i still want to learn how to chop samples up... joined gearslutz today, but everything seems so confusing on there, and again, it's all scattered...

we can start with the very basics...i've always been confused about the audio quality and different sound frequencies...i can tell the difference by ear, but i would like a proper explanation that one can understand...

i know a lot of people are always talking about starting up, so maybe we can have a thread dedicated to information regarding this...

I'm completely new and been trying to teach myself to produce. I started with abelton and wasnt really getting results. I switched to Logic Pro X and

guess i'll try out Logic 9 since imy Mac doesn't meet the requirements for X...

wow...Logic doesn't have any trails versions or demos...that blows...not about to pay mad guap for something i can't even sit with and try out...

I didn't exactly "pay" for it but yeah to me it has the easiest learning curve. From coming off just making stuff for fun on an ipad I couldn't even get a good sound on Abelton. I got Logic Pro and watched a quick tutorial and was able to make something somewhat decent in a day. Again I've didn't try anything but Abelton and Logic Pro, I have 0 experience but logic is fun and easy to use and there's a bunch of free sounds floating around

nah i dont... i usually make stuff from scratch when somebody wants something... i produce for too many people to actually build a catalog and i try to shy away from leasing for that reason

mpk is not worth it for the price imo esp if u gotta wait to get it... just get a 49 key controller with no pads... them ***** are a novelty

why do you say that...my friend had the MPK49 and i thought it was great, especially for beginners...and you can find them on craigslist for like $200...i was playing around with the Max Pro MPK49 yesterday, and though it was amazing (plus it's beautiful as hell)...

reviews have been pretty good on it...i was planning on picking one up...

why do you say that...my friend had the MPK49 and i thought it was great, especially for beginners...and you can find them on craigslist for like $200...i was playing around with the Max Pro MPK49 yesterday, and though it was amazing (plus it's beautiful as hell)...

What does semi weighted mean?

mean the keys feel more like a real piano... piano keys are heavy... basic midi controllers have light plastic keys... weighted keys are ideal for people who actually know how to play keys

alesis q49... $100 as most no frills 49 key controllers are... this one has held up better than any of my m audio joints (ive had at least 3 since 09). the usb ports always go out. ive had my alesis for at least a year and it still works perfect... no glitchy volume slider like my m audio ones and the usb port is still snug inside the casing (the m audio ones would eventually losen up and break the connection on the board)
