I posted this in the official PS3 thread but things often get overlooked there.

I rarely do this but..... I NEED HELP!!!!

My tv doesnt have hdmi ports, just dvi ports.
So I bought a dvi to hdmi cable, connected it and nothing happened.
I dont know what settings on the ps3 I have to change to get a picture
Thanks NT.

turn the ps3 to standby (red light), hold the power button down (it should go green and after a couple seconds you should hear a beep and see the green lightblink once then go solid) then let go of the power button

^^Wow.

But uhhh yeah, my PS3 just blew out for the third time yesterday. I'm buyin' a 360 today.

Thanks guys but I tried it and it didnt work.
Now the AV cables (red white yellow) dont work either. I dont get a picture only sound.
Am I doing something wrong?

Dont know if it helps but I have the slim version and my TV is DVI...NOT HDMI

Thanks. I got the red yellow white to work again but I cant get the DVI to work.
any chance my hdmi port in the back of the ps3 is deffective? or am I doing something wrong (again).
thanks NT is the greatest.

ok, so now that you've gotten the yellow video cable to work, go into the settings and change the video to go HDMI.

then connect your cable to the PS3 and TV and see if it works. if not, you've either got a bad cable or bad PS3.

easiest way to verify is to take it to a friend's house that is using HDMI.

thanks for your help guys

looks like i got a bad ps3.
i conected the DVI/HDMI cable to my cable box and the video was just fine.
When I connect that same cable to the ps3 I get a black screen

your tv has to support HDCP does your TV support the the resolutions such as 480i, 720p, or 1080i?

I had the same issue with this myself when I bought my PS3. I have an older rear projection HDTV in my living room that does not have HDMI ports. I thinkstyles23 is dead on with his assessment.

Chances are your older tv is NOT HDCP compliant. If it isn't, you wont be able to go HDMI to DVI. Thats what happened to me.

I had to end up running component cables (5 cables - red, white, yellow, blue, green i believe... not the 3 cable composite cables it came with) from the PS3to the TV for picture, and then had to buy an optical cable to run from PS3 to my Receiver. Technically the component cables carry sound to the TV, but if Iwanted to run the sound through my receiver and 5.1 I had to go with the optical.
