How does one even begin hacking into the damn SONY PLAYSTATION NETWORK

Luckily I haven't really been playing much so this hasn't affected me, but what was the point of hacking it in the first place? Can anyone inform me?

In all honesty, I wonder how much of the security breach is directly related to having a FREE online service as opposed to a paid subscription.

Like... what if the breach was a result of lack a decent security system because they couldn't fund it.
