Is there any historical origin of this attitude that some "minorities" have? The idea that, no matter how much I am struggling or in debt, I justHAVE to LOOK like I am doing just fine?

There has to be some history behind it that one of you learned in a class while in school or have read somewhere.

That is good thinking. Looking for a job you can't look like you're desperate for it

More like a psychological or sociological thing.

I blame television. Most people see people with material thing on TV and in music videos, they want that. But not only do that want that, they want it BEFOREanyone else they know. I've know people who spent rent/bill money to go on trips and buy things just so they can have the "bragging rights" thatthey have/did it too. I think its ignorant how people live beyond their means just to show off.

I thought being Hood Rich was actually having money but you live in the hood..because what you classified as hood rich is something that is not just found inthe hood but found everywhere.

Because these hood rich people do not know what wealth is. If they did they would save more than stunted. Moreover it goes back to slavery times where theslaves would really compete about who had the better slave master.

Trust this is not a hood thing at all. There are plenty of suburban households that do the same thing as well.

conspicuous consumption

and i think it's cheaper for them to spend their money on a car with rims and sound system or the latest clothes and shoes than to be saving up to try tobuy a house. I guess they are looking for immediate satisfaction.

You only live once.

Not everyone has the same goals... Short or Long Term.

What's the best way to measure one's success against others?
-wealth (or the appearance) and material possessions

It's hubris, ego, or whatever you want to call it. It happens across all demographics, but I would assume that the negative consequences are felt more bythe less wealthy.

I thought so too.

this is not only found in the hood... many White Americans live well above their means...

I disagree. Its comes from people's attempts to "keep up with the Jones." Which would make it sociological thing

This is no different than the thousands of white kids who graduate college in debt and live at home with their parents while driving 330i's and wearing thelatest of designer fashions. South Beach and SoCal is a HOT BED for that type of stuff. It's not a "minority" thing.

black people are the only race inherent to live outside their means?

so why are all these suburban homes being foreclosed?

those were all black homeowners?
