my dog is about 14 years old and he started getting really bad coughs.

We took him to the vet and the vet stated his heart murmur got worst. What’s weird is that after he came back from the vet, he can’t/won’t move and he is consistently breathing hard and peeing randomly.

This never happened u til right after the vet. He always hated going to the vet and I’m thinking that taking him to th me vet stressed him even more causing him to be like this. I understand he’s already old but I just want to hear some NT’ers experience with putting down their best friend. (Not that I plan to without any thinking.)

I’m taking him to the vet first thing tomorrow morning as well

My brother in law had put down his german shepherd due to a new born baby. The dog was not that well trained and my sister and neice was terrified of that dog. That dog was actually more scared of them when they screamed for thier lives when it got loose in the house.

Oh well. Dogs are cool but i can understand why people have emotional attachment to thier dogs or pets. They wont do you grimey like a human can.

Good luck and don’t forget all dogs go heaven.

He couldn't have just surrendered the dog?

That’s super sad. Esp the fact that the dog was more scared of them than they were of it.

Family dog bulldog/boxer mix. Had tumors on her mouth, got them removed several times.

End up getting a disease where she always thought she was hungry (can’t think of the name right now). Would literally eat like crazy and not gain anyway. One day she got into the cabinet and ate a full deep fryer worth of grease .

Also at the end couldn’t control her bowels. Mentally lost it too. Would be up at like 4 am just walking in circles . **** was so sad man. At that time nobody ever died that was close to me so this **** was hard. As crazy as it might sound she was like my sister lol.

My dad said a few times he drove with her to the vet to put her down but couldn’t do it :smh:. Once he told me he had a day locked in and was going to take her to get put down I just sat on the porch with her the entire night and cried :frown:. Shut was definitely hard.

Also one of the hardest parts was not having a dog in the house anymore . Couldn’t take it, about 3 months later I went and purchased another bulldog: boxer mix.

It’s definitely tough but if your dog isn’t getting any better then you know it’s something you have to do. Best wishes and sorry about your dog

This is cold blooded.

Sorry to hear that op.
I hope your dog lives many more years.
A solemn suggestion tho.

When it comes to that, some vets do house calls.
They do the deed there.
So your dog can fall asleep in a familiar place

I had to put my old girl down on my bday last year.

She was real old and in.a lot of pain.
She was 17 and her muscles and.bones in her legs were going out. You could hear her bones pop and click as she limped. It got so bad I had to carry her to use the bathroom. She wasnt making it outside a lot of the times and I was getting mad about her messing up the place. I was in denial about how old she had gotten because she was all white, hard to see where she was going grey and she was my childhood dog.

When I took her to the vet, I spent about an hour in the room with her before they came in and sedated her. She was asleep wwithin seconds. It was tough to see knowing that was it for her, but afterwards I felt relieved she wasn't suffering anymore and I realized I should have done it earlier. It was selfish of me to keep her around like that.

I miss her everyday, but I also remember that she had a very full life for a dog and try to focus on the happy memories.

You have to let them go when they are ready. Keeping them any longer is selfish. My boy, Rocky, was 14 years old and we were both taking a nap and he woke me up cause he was having a seizure/stroke in his kennel. Me, my wife, and Rock were in the car 2 minutes later doing 90 MPH to the vet.

He came to but he wasn't the same... he was pacing and ignoring us like he was trying to run away to die. At that moment he wasn't Rocky anymore. He was terrified, almost like he had dementia. The vet told us she could get him medicated and send him home but another episode could happen again and it would be worse. He was 14 so he was tired.

We decided it was best to put him down.

My only advice is to hold him and talk to him so you're the last thing he sees and hears.

Alot of vets have access to a company that will cremate him and give you a small urn with his paw print and some of his hair. If you can afford it, do it. We moved into our new home 6 months later and he came along too.

Had a German Shepherd mix growing up. Sweetest dog in the world. Would never let you put your head down without nudging you or coming under your arms.

I think she was about 12 years old when we put her down. She unfortunately ate a piece of metal when she was outside that shredded her insides. I woke up one morning and she couldnt use her hind legs. It was awful man. She was getting older but was healthy until that happened.

First dog I had, yellow lab. Sweetest dog with the most submissive, friendly temperament. His bark slowly because weaker and weaker. Eventually, when there was a thunder storm or fireworks (which he was always afraid of), he would have fits of gasping for air. Took him to the vet and they discovered he had paralysis of the larynx which is pretty common. Had to put him down soon thereafter as he would just suffer when anything caused him to breather rapidly. Family took it hard.

Second dog I had, chocolate lab. Rescued from Houston area. Typical chocolate lab, crazy high energy. Loved people but didn't get along well with other dogs. My suspicion was that he was a stray and treated poorly by other dogs. Also found out that he had epilepsy not long after I rescued him. He'd have minor seizures once per month where he'd just "freeze" up, eyes would glaze over and he would come to like 15 mins later. Five years after I adopted him he was showing signs of being in pain. Eventually started dripping urine. Took him to the vet found out he had a large mass pressing against his abdomen and bladder. Had to put him down.

The main reason why I just can’t gwt a dog even though I want one. Becoming that attached to a living soul only for it to inevitably leave you :{ nah fam, **** nah

Thanks for sharing your stories everyone. Fam and I decided to take my dog to the ER today. He’s still breathing heavy and standing still in the same place.

The dog I have now is the first I’ll be able to keep until whatever happens. I’ve accepted he will be my only dog because I won’t what to go through that more than once

Update.

My dog passed away today before going to the ER. He collapsed and blood poured out of his nose and mouth.

ER said his heart was congested and his heart stopped. Cried my eyes out. Had him since I was in 5th grade. I’m glad he didn’t suffer long and he lived a long life

goddamn man

keep your head up, just know your dog is in a better place instead of hurting now

sorry OP
