Question about security clearances

I know there are a good number of government employees and military on here.

After you're no longer a government employee, do you still have that clearance up until it expires, or is it gone once you process out?

I'm applying for new positions and a lot of them are asking about clearances and I'm not sure what to put

they last until it expires...which is why it is important to be working with an company when it is about to expire so they can re-up it.(my understanding anyway)

Okay thanks, now my next step is to find out when it expires.
And yeah I wish I could of stayed

loved that job. Just wanted to go a different route with my future.
