Is it better to put my laptop in sleep mode or just shut it down?
I heard a scratching sound in my laptop while I was taking a nap while my laptop was in sleep mode.

I shut down my laptop maybe once or twice a month, always on sleep.  Since Nov. 2010 and no problems yet.

Same

sleep mode is there for a reason so use it, you may wanna shut it maybe once every two weeks or so but not too often

well its BETTER to shut it down
but most people just put it to sleep.

if you know your not gonna use it for a few hours I would make a conscious effort to shut it down.

I always turn mine off.
I ain't trying to wake up to a fire.

i turn it off like every 5 days but mostly its just in sleep mode.

i never knew you can still hear things while your napping.

I have had my macbook since 08 and i have always been a put to sleep kind of guy. Only recently have i had issues with my backlight but my battery life is still fine

I make sure to turn it off.
During the sleep mode it is still wasting its charge.

could have been a cd or ur harddrive..i always shut it down when im on the go for that very reason but if i kno i'll be using it,sleep

Not sure why this question is Mac specific.  The battery for my laptop is really old and way past the recommended number of cycles.  The battery usually runs out and it shuts down by itself.  I do put it in sleep mode when I can.

I put it to sleep.

I shut it down every once in a while.

I've always put my iMac in sleep mode when I'm not using it. The only time I actually shut down my iMac is when I am out of town for a few days or if I run and install updates and a restart is necessary.

sleep mode shuts down the HD & monitor while keeping open programs available in RAM. This allows you to access it much quicker when turning it back on. Therefore, your hard drive shouldn't have been spinning while it was sleeping unless it powered back on for some reason.

i have never shut down my macbook pro overnight.. have had it for 1 year.
