Quick basketball question...need clarification

If a player is standing out of bounds and the ball hits them is it considered out of bounds on them?

Now, this happened today in a pickup game so it's not that serious an issue, but my boy is standing out of bounds, it hits him on the way out after deflecting off of me. I thought it was my ball, but my boy said that he is 100% positive that it was his team's ball because he did this during a game he played in high school. I gave them the ball cuz I really wasn't sure, but he said if you are out of bounds, the ball can't go off you and award the other team the ball.

Still perplexed, but I agree with your answer. Anyone else?

Yeah my dad used to coach college...

Growing up we would play 1 on 1 and after missing a lay up or something, he would get the ball and throw it at me resulting in his ball
