Quick question

was gifted an ipod nano a few years ago...but now hit freezes a lot thus the battery dies quickly since it never goes to sleep. im not sure if its covered by a warranty or anything. can i take it to the apple store to have them look at it and they can tell me if its warranted or not or if they can even fix it. or just take the L and get a new one?
