Quick XBOX LIVE Question

Is your Xbox Live gamertag supposed to be separate from your profile on your Xbox console? Are they two separate profiles, with two different gamerscores?

I just got Xbox Live today (finally), and can't find the answer online.

you gamertag is the same thing..

just now when you log in it will say (xbox live hdd)

So why when I go to sign into a profile from my dashboard, I can sign into either my console profile, or my Xbox Live profile(with the gamertag). Could it have something to do with the fact that I am using a Free One-Month Trial, and not a subscription?

And if it doesn't have anything to do with that, did I mess up? And is there any way to correct it?
