Radar Detector recommendations?

In light of my recent speeding ticket
i've decided to invest in a radar detector to increase my chances of avoiding more speeding tickets.

any recommendations you guys would make?
best detector in your experience?

i've heard that not all radar detectors will work nowadays because cops use "lasers" instead of "radar" to catch speeding drivers???
or that some detectors are too damn good and alert me way before it is really needed.
is there any truth to that?

i live in texas if it matters.

If you're gonna get one, don't go cheap. Either the Escort Passport 9500ix or Valentine 1. NO OTHER RADAR DETECTOR MATTERS. The money you spend on these will easily equal out if it saves you even 1 ticket.

Radar detectors are still very useful on freeways with a lot of traffic. For LIDAR, which is laser, it's much harder for cops to use because the range is shorter and requires a direct line of sight. You won't find them using them on busy highways and all but more so in light traffic areas such as mountain roads or smaller freeways. They typically use these in corners where you can't see them.

I currently own an Escort 9500ix and my friend owns a Valentine 1. I recently got caught speeding on Highway 152 in CA, but that is a small freeway and I was the only car within 1500 feet. The cop was camped out on a turn that you couldn't see until you rounded it and he used LIDAR, which left me with no time to react. However, these situations are usually less common since if there were any cars ahead of me, my radar detector would've caught it. It works by detecting any wavelengths emitted by these guns but since there was nobody, I had no chance. However, don't let this deter you because I have detected cops COUNTLESS times and avoided the possibility of tickets especially driving up and down CA or to and back from Vegas.

Yep I've had an passport escort 9500 for a few years now. I highly suggest it. The radar goes crazy WAY before I ever see the cop.

You really need to give more info for help...

What has worked for me is always being alert. Usually cops always hide out in the same area or similar type of areas, so when I drive on main streets with hidden inroads, I either avoid those main streets altogether or slow down. I also always have my rear view mirror at an angle where I can glance at it every couple of minutes without having to take my eyes off the road.

Paying attention to the flow of traffic has also saved me a couple of times. On the highways one of things I like doing if I'm the lead car on the fast lane is slow down just a couple of mph, no more than ~5, and whoever is behind me usually passes me up and then speeds up faster than they would normally drive. Overall keeping my rear view mirror at glancing distance, paying attention to the flow of traffic (especially a mile or so ahead), and not driving fast at night is what has helped and saved me.

Getting to places on time when you live in the Dallas area isn't always easy, you almost always have to hit the freeways.
Sometimes I have an 30-40-min to get from downtown fort worth the downtown dallas

Yeah man I usually keep it under 69 (speed limit 60 inner city) on the free ways if there are no cars around. but if there are lots of cars around then i tend to go with the flow of the traffic, which sometimes reaches the mid and high 70s.

If you were in my situation which would you pick the escort you named or the valentine 1?




anyways i've found some cheaper ones on craigslist that are used, should i avoid that and buy a new one?

I have experience with the V1. It really pays for itself if you're doing a lot of highway driving. In my case I mostly use it for trips from LA to Vegas or San Diego. I used to use it in the city but it can get annoying at times when it goes off randomly.

As far as buying used, I'm sure its fine as long as the serial numbers match.

It is, but if you detect laser and it's aimed at you, it's already too late. No radar detector can effectively detect a LIDAR in time.

Personally, I would go with the Passport because it has GPS and will eventually lock out signals. So if you commute, all those false alarms will eventually be locked out when it repeatedly detects them.

I used to have a passport 8500 a couple years back and the thing was trash, so many false alarms and missed alerts. I returned it with the quickness and never purchased another radar.

this is what i recommend since ive heard nothing but good things about it

i was contemplating getting it or one period but i was looking around and some people were saying detectors are worthless it scared me off. i got a quick whip and i wanna speed but cops in my area are trigger happy when it comes to giving out tickets and my car is bright red and black so easy to spot and its not smart to speed
