Realistically, what has the sweep done to Kobe's legacy?

it will do nothing just like 04 and 08, especially if theyre back in contention next year

the sad part is that the only people who think it does are the haters, if kobe gets a 6th ring, the complaint will be "but he didnt get it in a 3peat... hes no jordan..."

This is NT. To them MJ is the GOAT and is better in any category.

This era has way better talent and teams.

People just like to bring up the same 10 players from the 90s

0 for 4 on that reply

Kobe is going to be remembered for his successes (5 rings, Olympic Gold) rather than his failures. The sweep wont hurt his legacy one bit.

IMO this doesn't do anything to affect his legacy. Matter of fact, I expect Kobe and the Lakers come back hungrier and motivated after the embarrassing sweep; swinging for the fences next year in the playoffs. And this is coming from a Mavs fan.

i hope that is not the case...

as far as the question goes naw. seems like when the lakers get eliminated in the playoffs they get eliminated badly for example blowouts in the last 4 times they were eliminated from the playoffs by the mavs, celtics, suns, and detroit. when they get eliminated they get obliterated...

Kobe has been to the finals 7 times. not many players can say they have done that....

Enter all the MJ fans who make him out to be the only reason he has 6 rings.

MJ never had to deal with his #2 being a complete ghost for 2 series in a row, playing worse than Kwame @#$!+@* brown.

Instead, he had Scottie Pippen. One of the GREATEST players of all time, arguably the best defender on the court every single game for them. He didn't have to worry about Scottie not performing, he'd be putting up 20 a night every playoff game in those Bulls runs and being a defensive monster.

Oh and when MJ wasn't there? He almost led the Bulls to the ECF without Mr. MJ himself and was arguably the MVP that year. Yea... Pau would be able to do the same thing right?

He also had Dennis Rodman a rebounding monster who got into the heads of every player he went against. Dude was breaking records, no other Laker besides Kobe is breaking records on our team.

I'm not hating on MJ at all, but you Kobe haters try and make it seem like MJ was doing things on his damn own whenever Kobe loses.

Forget talking about Kobe though, Scottie was not going to let MJ go out without a fight. Something that our #2 would never be capable of doing and is the softest player in the league in alot of NT'ers eyes, except it's only Kobe's fault..

The fact that there's a thread made talking about an NBA players legacy  who has 5 rings. FIVE CHAMPIONSHIP RINGS, when most of all these haters current NBA favorites don't even have one is a joke.

There should be a thread about Pau Gasol and how it's possible to be the best power forward in the league a few months before this series and end up playing worse than Kwame @#$!+@* Brown.

You see this is what exactly I'm talking about. You protest about "ring count" with MJ when he's compared to Kobe and bring up how it's a team sport (which you're right about), then you turn around and flaunt Kobe's rings over everyone else as if team play isn't relevant.

Y'all need to STOP. FLIP. FLOPPING. with your argument.

Some of you may think my request to be foolish.  Surely, the Los Angeles Lakers know that their season teeters on the brink tonight.  Surely, they know that anything less than desperation will see them make a quick and inauspicious exit from these playoff proceedings.  Surely, a team led by Kobe Bryant, one of the fiercest competitors in the history of the game, will make sure that, if the Lakers are to make their end, they will make that end attempting to be the legends they have built themselves up to be.
As strange as it is to conceive, history says it isn't so.  No team which has included Kobe Bryant as a member has ever gone out with a bang, unless it is in victory.  It's stunning how badly Bryant's teams have performed in the final moments of seasons in which a banner was not earned.  Check out the list:
  • 1997:  Defeated in the second round in 5 games by the Utah Jazz, including Kobe's infamous last shot airballs
  • 1998: Same team, even worse result.  The Jazz swept the Lakers in the second round
  • 1999: Swept in the second round this time by the San Antonio Spurs
  • 2000-2002: Rings
  • 2003: Defeated in the second round in 6 games by the Spurs.  Game 6 was a 28 point beatdown
  • 2004: Defeated in the NBA Finals in 5 games by the Detroit Pistons.  Heavily favored coming in, the Lakers lost 3 of the four games by double digits, and the one game they won required a deep three pointer by Bryant to send the game into overtime.  This was basically the first five game sweep in history.
  • 2005: Missed playoffs.  For what it's worth, the Lakers also ended the season 2-19 down the stretch
  • 2006: Defeated in the first round in 7 games by the Phoenix Suns.  Although their overall performance in the series was quite admirable, the Lakers lost a 3-1 series lead, and Game 7 was the infamous "Kobe gave up" game.  Whether you believe in that narrative or not, that game, in which the Lakers lost by 29, was most certainly a whimper
  • 2007: The Suns dispatched the Lakers with ease in the first round, winning in 5 games
  • 2008: Defeated by the Boston Celtics in the NBA Finals in 6 games, with the final game a 39 point annnihilation
  • 2009-2010: More rings
  • 2011: Swept by Mavs, routed in final game by 36.
And that's the list.  It really is absolutely incredible.  No Laker team that has included Kobe Bryant has ended the season with a strong, fight to the last man effort, unless that season has ended with a championship.  In all the other seasons, his teams have bowed out with tails between their legs.

This needs to hang in every Laker fans room. Every Lakers thread, along with every elitist, Laker loving stanish posters sig.

There is a ton of #$+$*%*+ in this thread, a ton of excuses, and apologists.

Kobe's legacy probably won't and shouldn't take a hit for this series, he will go down as one of the greatest ever, no question.

But the above should be a reminder to Laker fans that think their team is so high and might and superior.

And all this HORSE $*%! about "we are getting Dwight so it's ok" shut up...jesus christ...bunch of whiny children.

I never said anything bad about MJ and his rings though like people in this thread are trying to do.

Kobe's teammates were a big reason that he has 5 as well as MJ's teammates, but what was seen by Pau Gasol this series is something MJ never had to deal with on any of his 3-Peat journeys.

I love MJ, but damn. Some people swear like Kobe has tarnished his damn legacy because he didn't get number 6 this year.

Think about that for a minute. He didn't get number 6. 6 damn championships.
