My computer crashes too much lately, and I keep losing my music...plus I need more room as well once I start d/l a lot.

Any old external drive work...or is there a best brand/model?

I'm looking for one of the newer hard drives that you just plug into the USB...

Looking to spend like $60-80.

Don't be scared to drop a link...

First I'd figure out why your computer keeps crashing. What do you mean by that exactly?

ehh, i don't even know...not like ALL the time i guess...but like it'll just shut down, then i can't turn it back on...the fan on itis SUPER loud...i think there is something wrong with it...i am gonna get a new laptop eventually, but an external drive will give me some security til then.

i'm looking for at least 100 GB.

this dude thinks heat is a problem with external 2.5" drives. Weuse the passports at work. They're very reliable.

Well I haven't had any problems with it and I use it a lot. Mostly watching movies on my WD TV HD player and it has been pretty good.

What do you think is the common death of most drives? overheating

That's a hell of a deal then. Usually on Amazon, you will find deals like that if you search long enough.

I got a couple newbie questions about these hard drives. I'm running out of room on my laptop and would like a hard drive to store my music and movies.I'm not computer savvy at all, so my questions may appear really stupid

- Do I need to install windows on this drive to store my stuff on there?
- What steps should I take to move all my music and movies from my laptop to a new hard drive?

Thanks in advance.

In the case of Western Digital or with most externals, you just plug it in and drag the files into the hard drive. It's that easy. If youneed to transfer files larger than 4 gigs, then you have to reformat the external hard drive to NTFS, which takes just seconds to accomplish.

^ cool thanks. I think I'm gonna have to move over folders bigger than 4GB. How would I reformat to NTFS?

I have a western digital 320 gb, bought it 2 summers ago. Absolutely no problems. I knew I wasn't going to be carrying it around that much so portabilitywasn't an issue for me. I bought mine for like $120 which back then was a good deal, now you can get 1 tb for that price.

I meant if a single file is larger than 4gb. If you have 1000 songs that's over 4gb but each song is 6mb, then that would be fine. If you can keep it atFAT32 format then keep it there because NTFS does not work for everything (like your PS3).
