Recommend Some Good Whiskey...

It rapidly evolved into my drink of choice, but I figure there's more to the world than Jack...
...not looking to get hammered or anything, just something I can sip slow while enjoying the flavor.

I've been told the best way to get the full flavor of your chosen whiskey is to enjoy it at room temperature - is that true or false?

What qualities/characteristics should I look for when purchasing?

Depends on what kind you're interested in..

Irish Whiskey, Single Malt Scotch Whisky, Blended Scotch Whisky, Bourbon, Tennessee Whiskey, Rye Whiskey, Canadian Whisky, to name the big ones..

I'm not expert by any means, but I enjoy bourbon mostly, Maker's Mark is always a solid choice to start off with. Maybe pick up a bottle of Johnnie Walker Black to give blended Scotch a try.

Many recommend in order to appreciate and enjoy the full flavor, not to add ice to it, or instead maybe a couple drops of water. It's really whatever you prefer, but you do the liquor a disservice if you water it down too much with ice.

i like dickle. in my opinion the best not expensive bottle. 20 bucks for a bottle, very sippable.

I also had this $200 bottle of Chivas Regal(Scotch Whiskey) last week.  It was

The aforementioned scotch whiskies are good. Another good but relativley cheap scotch whiskey is Cutty Shark. Very even flavor. Not too sweet not too strong. Also for a good bourbon I recommend Woodford Reserve.
