Looking to back up all the info on my MacBook Pro and I'm thinking I'd like to get something with about 500 GB of storage. I definitely don't need a TB (yet lol).Any good external hard drives you guys can recommend?

Free Agent Passport GoFlex is what i use for my ext. drive for my macbook pro. Its very reasonable for 500GB i think its like $70.

Fry's had this (http://www.frys.com/produ...=sr:SEARCH:MAIN_RSLT_PG) for only $40 bucks this past weekend I believe. Not sure if they still have that price in-store.

I purchased the Seagate go flex just because it is compatible with Mac and PC sometime I do my homework on my MacBook pro and then have to use the schools pcs

I wanna say as long as you format it if it isnt already FAT-32 it will work for Macs

FAT32 should work fine for both platforms - unless youre going to be moving files over 4gb's each. At that point it gets messy because the formats youd use for PC/Mac to move files that big dont work with the other OS.
I got a 1TB WD Passport for 90 bucks during black friday. Not too sure if it was a great deal but it seemed decent and I needed one immediately. No problems yet with it. Have it partitioned 640/360 so I can have my laptop on it through time machine and the rest is big files like my DVD images and such.

@OP I highly suggest you purchase this drive! It's preformatted for mac, no annoying freeware, and it's pretty damn reliable.
I've have mine for about 6 months and it has worked flawlessly.
It gets pretty hot during time machine backups and it can get moderately noisy only during backups of about 100+ gigs of data.
