Yea um nah, the Quran isn't a peer reviewed scientific paper, I've read it. You can literally make whatever you want out of it. Objectively I think the God in the Koran and the Bible is a schizophrenic, jealous, murderous animal but the analysis you've been taught I suppose is equally valid.
The worst thing you can tell an atheist is "Do the research for yourself". That's how I became an atheist in the first place.

Again, truth is absolute, there is no skew, there is no changing over time. You're talking about individual perspective and interpretation of truth. But for the most part i agree with everything you said. I would say that it doesnt have to be one or the other. Im not saying we have to choose one and opperate solely off that. The allegory doesnt conflict with science or critical thinking.

you are right, i am looking at it through an individual perspective. and that's what im referring too. i feel like allegory is good for imagination and moral code. however, when facing issues in reality we have to question things and not take things at the surface. science provides that but written scriptures for religious purposes do not.
that is just my opinion though.

This one always cracked me up when justifying "sins" as a thing God would judge people over.
People will say " god gave you free will "
Thats cool but god knows everything about what I have done and knows the choices I will make AND he set up the doubt filled scenarios for me to make the mistakes in.
Im really supposed to believe this great guy is setting up sting operations on earth from a giant behavioral judgment complex in the sky?
Why do people think anyone powerful enough to make all this..........is petty enough to sit around every day for thousands of years judging his creations he knows are imperfect?
We really really dont give whoever did this enough credit and the way we think about it is pure ego.
We dont need to do anything for him... if he wanted us to, it would be clear.

There's plenty of Bible passages that amount to "don't judge" or "treat others how you want to be treated" but also rampant hatred for homosexuality. Some of those people would probably burn gays at the stake if they could.
Take a look at the 2016 GOP platform. In the political thread I outlined its obsession with reversing the legalization of gay marriage and legalizing LGBT discrimination through religious freedom laws. It's mentioned over and over and over again. There's even a full chapter dedicated solely to reversing gay marriage
Trump's VP pick supports gay conversion therapy and this week they have appointed Rick Santorum as a catholic outreach advisor. They said they would pass the First Amendment Defense Act, which would legalize businesses discriminating against gays under the guise of religious beliefs.

My point is that there is no individual perspective to truth. If you have a different perspective of truth than someone else, one of you is wrong. You dont look at science from an individual perspective. Something either is or it isnt, universally.
How do you know what allegory is good for if you dont know what it is, if you dont know the message or information its trying to convey?

i would just have to agree to disagree. the fact that what is true to you don't mean it's universally true to everyone. and i feel like most of the time, no one is really right or wrong. but that's another topic.
with science, i prefer it's methods because if you can do it, then so can i. which makes it universal. and anyone can apply it. there is no bias.
allegory is good in the sense when you read a book. there is a moral that you get from it. the mistaken part of religion is that people take it as actual 'truth' in the sense that those events actually happened. and like you stated early, that is not the essence of religion imo.

Was that Islam, or the Muslims that carried out the action? Muslims have definitely been responsible for some atrocities in Africa (I'm Sudanese myself), but is Islam to blame for that? I'd place the blame more on racism and greed

Yeah it includes that as well, homosexuality is illegal where I'm from because of it. I know it's not the most progressive thing to say, but I don't really have an issue with it though.
No you WANT to blame it on racism and greed alone, you can't separate the ideology from the perpetrator of atrocities when it is convenient to you bruh. Islam as an ideology was just as destructive to Africa as European Imperialism as an ideology. And the sad part is these ideologies raped and pillaged through Africa and the victims still hold on to many of the ideals of their masters.
So in your eyes, if a Muslim kills another man but doesn't claim to do it in the name of Islam, is he representative of all Muslims?

I just wanna know why you can't separate the ideology from the perpetrator. We all pick and choose every day. The ideology didn't make him do it, it's what he chose to interpret and his own actions that did. So who is at fault?
