REPORT: APPLE DEVELOPING A FLASH ALTERNATIVE

The heated battle between Apple and Adobe Systems over Flash may get a bit more interesting, as reports of a Flash alternative being developed by Apple begin to surface.

The technology, called Gianduia, was introduced by Apple last summer at its World of WebObjects Developer Conference, according to an AppleInsider report. Gianduia is described as being "a client-side, standards-based framework for rich Internet apps."

Apple has apparently been using Gianduia in several of its retail support applications, including services such as the One to One program, theiPhone reservation system, and the Concierge program for Genius Bar and Personal Shopping reservations.

The use of a standards-based technology makes sense for Apple, considering its position on Flash. Apple has made it very clear that it opted to support HTML5, JavaScript, and CSS instead of Flash.

Apple hasn't supported Flash in any of its mobile devices, from the latestiPad, going back to the original iPhone. In fact, in an open letter about the technology, CEO Steve Jobs called Flash "a closed system" and said "we strongly believe that all standards pertaining to the Web should be open."

When it announced Creative Suite 5, Adobe said Flash would allow its developers to export projects as apps for use on the iPhone,iPod, and iPad. However, a change to its iPhone Developer Licensing Agreement banned developers from using technologies other than Apple's to develop applications.

"We know from painful experience that letting a third-party layer of software come between the platform and the developer ultimately results in substandard apps, and hinders the enhancement and progress of the platform," said Jobs in his letter.

Adobe subsequently said it would abandon future development of the technology.

However, Adobe wasn't finished with the issue. The company reportedly complained to U.S. authorities about Apple's behavior, which may lead to an antitrust investigation by the Federal Trade Commission or the Department of Justice.

This dude isn't interested in progress. He's interested in forcing Apple product users to view & listen to media only if it goes through Apple first.

75% of web content is flash enabled. Currently, Apple product users reach that content without having to go through the Apple app store.  Changing the format gives Apple the ability to channel the flow of that media according to how they see fit just like they do with everything in their app store.  That's an antitrust lawsuit begging to occur.

if its closed and so terrible, why is it used by almost everyone for EVERYTHING? It just seems like a industry standard right now and the incentive to change is not really there.

I don't understand.. They want to reinvent something and call their own just to be able to call it their own and make money off of it..

Adobe is not a closed system, its a private system. All Steve Jobs is trying to do is justify the reason he doesn't want to go the flash route. He wants a controlled ecosystem and does not want adobe nor any company to benefit from its success. The reason Apple is trying to go the HTML5 route is because its not owned by anyone and will be supported/implemented by all browser over time.

Put it like this apple has sold a bunch of iphones since the 1st gen and right now they have a huge market, essentially what they are trying to do is force current and future web development to "dead flash" and move onto something that's not private.

Put it like this, Adobe flash has been available for a good while now way before high speed internet. Before browsers were made to optimize bandwidth and were more dial up oriented. Adobe developed a web script in the form of a plug-in. It's not open in the sense that browsers can implement it like say "javascript".

Adobe got on the idea way ahead of its time and has constantly worked and improved on it, this is a good reason why its so popular. I wouldn't say its industry standard but it has a high usage level.

No company is anything without partners.

Apple is creating a self-sustaining ecosystem though where even if they have no partners down the line they'll still be able to eat nicely.

Adobe suing apple would be funny though. On what grounds would they sue them for?
