Derek needs 50 years minimum in a regular security prison. These cops need to know that they CAN be punished for doing wrong and that their badge can't be used as a literal and figurative shield.
Glad this verdict was handed down, but its crazy how much at to happen for it to even go this way. I only watched/listened to some of the trial in passing, but the prosecution basically had to be perfect, but they were logical throughout. Everything was on camera, even all the moments beforehand. It was unequivocal evidence. The defense team's entire plan was just to get the jurors and judge to make it seem like everything on camera wasn't what actually happened. They used so much gobbledy****, and purposely made longwinded statements to try to get the jurors to forget and just give up, like a class lecture that's taking too long, so you just tune out. It didn't work. Also, the main defense attorney carried himself like a slime-ball. It was painfully easy to not believe a single thing he said. I couldn't believe one of the other guys on the defense team tried to paint the picture of Derek's adrenaline kicking in and not realizing his one strength. That's a disgusting tactic that should get you barred from practicing.

Stand your ground laws weren’t made for black folks. Trust. All a cop sees is a black girl with a knife, legality be damned. Hearing that she allegedly called the cops because she was being assaulted makes the whole story even more gut wrenching.
