It's not the best beach in NYC no doubt about that...their are some/plenty of knuckle heads out there also. BUT, if your used to the hood-oriented people, and minding your own business...60-70% chance you'll be fine.

If you're avoiding Far Rockaway, which I would hope/suggest you do, than the Rockaway Beaches (streets 127-149) are
. That's the beach I consistently go to.
Pros: Good looking females, rarely have I seen trouble arise, etc. Q35 goes along the streets I mentioned above. Parking by Riis Park is only $5 and you can walk to the Rockaway Beaches no problem.
Cons: You can't park your car on the streets of the mansions/beach front properties on weekdays/weekends during beach season. Food is only on 127th street.

appreciate the info fellas. usually hit up long beach but wanted to see how rockaway been doing (closer to the crib)

Go by Riis Park, but you have to pay for parking I believe... Or just somehow sneak into Breezy Point, no problems over there
