Interested in picking up a new language and of course, Rosetta Stone is the first thing that comes to mind. Their prices are relatively pricey but Im willing to shed some cash if their program truthfully works. Has anyone on NT every used Rosetta Stone and had successful results? Please fill me in on anything I should know before pulling the trigger, or if I should pull the trigger at all. They guarantee with their first foundation CD you will master the basics of the language. Thanks in advance guys and gals.

They are charging you for what you can do yourself with a book, pencil, paper, microphone and mp3 player. It's a pretty pricey investment so I would suggest going back to basic vocabulary translations of words and commonly used phrases before you jump in all the way on that. That way even if you do decide to go into it, you'll be at least informed. my $0.02

Rosetta Stone is nice, but the best way to learn a language is to be immersed in it.

If it's something like spanish and you have a spanish speaking friend, ask them to help you in addition to the Rosetta.

When you watch DVDs, change the language to spanish.

etc.

I know someone who used it for like Italian or something
and said it was just random vocab. basically short memorization. Kind of how
Kindergartners learn, like here is a picture, here is a phrase. memorize it. If I
asked you what each word meant chances are you would have no idea because
you just memorized a phrase and did not truly take grasp of the language.

I definitely wouldn't go for it just because it's expensive when I could just
watch a couple of tv shows/movies in the native language or make my own flashcards
and learn as much as Rosetta Stone is going to tell me and more.
