Offensive Coordinator Steve Sarkisian of the USC Trojans talks to Mark Sanchez on the sideline during the game against the Arizona State Sun Devils on October 11, 2008 at the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum in Los Angeles, California.

The Washington Huskies have settled on Steve Sarkisian as their new coach, according to a report on ESPN and multiple sources.

A former UW player told The Times that someone who works at the university, with knowledge of the situation, confirmed the report. The former player was told that UW had hoped to delay announcing the hiring until USC - Sarkisian's current team - played its final regular-season game Saturday against UCLA.

Washington athletic director Scott Woodward, speaking to reporters before Washington's basketball game against Oklahoma State on Thursday night, would neither confirm nor deny the report, saying only he had nothing yet to announce.

"We will not talk about it until we are ready to talk about it," he said.

Asked further about the report he said, "We'll see when the announcement comes."

Sarkisian, approached by reporters in Los Angeles after USC's practice Thursday, also denied the report. He said he had talked with UW officials on Wednesday but denied he had been offered or taken the job.

Sarkisian, 34, is USC's associate head coach and offensive coordinator.

He played quarterback at BYU in 1995 and 1996.

He interviewed at UW on Thanksgiving Day and one source said Thursday that "he thought it went really well."

Another source told The Times on Thursday night Sarkisian badly wants the job and has had some of his coaching friends lobbying the Huskies on his behalf. It had been thought nothing would be done concerning Sarkisian until after USC plays Saturday.

One source said Woodward was blown away by Sarkisian's interview and decided to go with a young, energetic face to take over for the fired Tyrone Willingham.

Earlier in the day, two coaches known to have interviewed for the job - Fresno State's Pat Hill and Texas Tech's Mike Leach - had withdrawn their names from consideration.

The hire, if it comes to fruition, caps a search that began when Willingham was informed on Oct. 27 that he would not be back as coach next season.

I read that he interviewed for the job. Didn't know he signed. I just saw dude @ conquest tonight on campus. Guess he has Pete's blessing... I lookforward to lighting them up next year.

I joke about him getting fired but I hope he turns the show around up there

PAC-10 Coordinator + West Coast ties + UW Alumini Money = Makin noise in PAC-10

Dont be surprised if UW is back to a player in the PAC-10, hopefully Sarkisian fixes up the schools rep especially with punishing players for their off-fieldaction
But all in all i like this move

At least Sarkisian has a good QB in Locker to work with.

Hopefully he can stay healthy.

Sarkisian is a very good recruiter, especially in the SoCal area. Not enough to steal Pete's thunder, but enough to steal Neuheisel's,

Come on my man....

UW has been GOOD in the past.
A lot of people are young on this board.... and don't know that UW has been a good football University in the past.

^ UW was GREAT. Three straight Rose Bowls in the early 90's. Then the were just good after that. How the might have fallen.

They were good for many years, you know, until Don James left. Eight years ago they won a Rose Bowl, beating a juggernaut 8-4 Purdue team, aftereking out win after win on last second field goals all season. Since then they've had two winning seasons ('01 and '02), haven't won a bowlgame, have lost 4 of the past 5 Apple Cups (unheard of), had a 1-10 season, and recently wrapped up a winless season. So yes, UW was good in past, but now, they are the worst program in D-1 football.

I wouldn't call winning only two bowl games since the 1991 season and winning more than 7 games only four times since then "justgood." They've been consistently mediocre, save for one season.

Dude...three straight Rose Bowls in the EARLY 90's. I never said great since then. '90-'92 Great. '93-'02 Good. '03-Present Putrid.

I couldn't be happier to hear this news, I have never been a fan of Sarkisian. Time for Norm Chow to come back

I was not aware of that, was it because PC took that NFL money and Pete wanted him to stay, or was it personal?
