It's not supposed to get you high. It's honestly something you smoke for flavor and to help you relax. It's more of a middle eastern cultural thing.
I've been smoking it for about 10 years now and IDK why it suddenly picked up in popularity. Maybe because of all the smoke that comes out? Who knows.
What dude said up top is true. If you want to smoke good quality hookah, hit up Astoria, Queens. Those shops on Steinway street has been there since the late 90's and they prepare it properly.
Things you should know about Hookah:
1. If you're not smoking out of a Khalil Mamoon (the actual pipe) you're not smoking Hookah right.
2. If all you taste is smoke/ash and not the actual flavor you're just putting yourself in harm.
3. You shouldn't be smoking one bowl of Sheesha (the flavor tobacco) for more than 45 mins unless you replace it with fresh Sheesha.
4. If you pack the bowl yourself, never over pack and have the sheesha touch the aluminum foil. The key is to heat the sheesha, never to directly have coal burning it.
5. Never use quicklight coals. They smell horrible and add a horrible taste to your sheesha. Get the natural coconut coals if you're smoking at home.
6. Always wash your hookah after every use. Never use the same water in the base more than once. If you really wanna see awesome clouds, add ice to the base.
7. NEVER EVER put alcohol in the base. I cannot stress this enough. You guys have no idea what this does to your lungs, body and brain. It causes serious damage.
8. Remember, Hookah isn't meant to get you high like weed. The most it'll do is give you a buzz and make you feel lightheaded. That's because you're smoking so much and the lack of oxygen that's going to your brain.
9. Never smoke the sheesha without using aluminum foil. There's certain sheesha for that and it's called Salloom. It's the equivalent of smoking a cigar, but without the large smoke clouds. It taste horrible and it's something older men smoke.
10. Do not inhale the smoke. You're just going to cough like crazy and be disappointed when you don't see those crazy clouds.
Final mentions: If you smoke at home like I do, I usually get Starbuzz sheesha. You guys should try Strawberry Margarita, Pirates Cave and Citrus Mist. If you love the minty stuff like I do try Simply Mint.

all truth, but i inhale the smoke i just dont hold it in, so pretty much when i inhale it i exhale it kinda like taking a breath. 

if you like starbuzz do yourself a favor and try some Tangier's tobacco.

This sums it up. People in NYC should hit up Astoria right by Steinway they have a pretty long block just filled with hookah spots and it's always popping during weekend. l lived here my entire life and back in the days it was mostly old middle eastern dudes just chilling but lately been more of younger crowd.

It sort of is. When I went out to LA, a lot of the shops seemed dead. IDK why, but you can smoke it in smoke shops out there too. It's a shame that it's dying in Cali, because all the new innovative sheesha is first made and produced out there. They get all the new flavors and cool Hookah accessories first.

Some Iraqi dudes put me on it when I was vacationing in there country a few years back and I do it pretty regularly. There are many ways to freak it and make the sheesh stronger as well as mixtures for the water that can make you get a stronger buzz.

The popularity of Hookah started a little after Desert Storm. Many of the service men and women smoked it when they were out there. On their way back to the US, a lot of them brought back hookah pipes as souvenirs and novelty items. If you went to a Middle Eastern grocery store, you could find sheesha there, but back then you wasn't going to find all the crazy flavors they have now. back then you only had flavors like Salloom, Mint and Double Apple. Hookah purist will strictly only smoke those three flavors. Some consider Double Apple to be the ideal flavor for smoking hookah. I personally like it, but it's not something I'd smoke all the time. It's awesome to have it every so often. I still get buzzes from it till this day and I've been smoking it for 10 years now. Only Double Apple and Mint has this affect on me.

If you want a stronger buzz, pack in mint with the flavor. Also, when you pull the smoke, let it out through nose and then lift your head and exhale. Guaranteed buzz.
For crazy clouds, I suggest you add ice to the base. You get that cooling sensation. Also, some people like to put milk. I never liked this. Makes the pull feel weird for me. I guess it's a preference.
If you want to add some great flavor to your fruity sheesha--get a packet of kool-aid and mix the water in the base with it. You'll get great taste. When I smoke flavors like orange or tangerine, I sometimes put Tropicana orange juice in the base. Makes the flavor that much stronger/sweeter.

Also, you can add stuff like difusers that attach to the bottom of the stem as well for cleaner smoke. I have this and it's great. Really gives me awesome clouds.

Yes, you can, but it won't be a great high. Remember, you're not burning the weed directly, you're "baking" it. You need to mix it with tobacco or sheesha to get the affect. It's a slow burn though.

Anybody know anything about cleaning them? I have one sitting in my house, left by my moms bf before he died.

Tips for cleaning your Hookah:

1. For the base I would run it through hot water and then pour warm water into the base. I'd then add baking soda and some lemon juice after. Let it sit for about a day and you're base will be like new.

2. The same applies for the stem as well. Get a long brissel cleaner and make sure you clean the insides of the stem as well. Run warm after after.

3. The hose is a little tricky, because now all hoses are washable. If you wash a nonwashable hose, you're going to build up gunk and rust for the metal wiring inside. Not safe and gives you a bad experiences. If you want a nice hose get this one. it's the best hose in the market.

4. Just run warm water and rinse the bowl. If your bowl is chipped and flimsy (I'm assuming so, because it's old) get a clay bowl. Or even a vortex bowl.

Yes, but what's the point? It's best for sheesha.




On a side note: I'm an investment banker (not gonna name the company I work for ), and when I go out with coworkers Friday/Saturday night--we always end the night at a hookah bar in downtown Manhattan. IDK what it is, but bankers LOVE hookah. I'd say they love hookah almost as much as we love cocaine (Never done it before).
