So lastnight I was playing ball and unfortunately came down pretty hard on my knee during a layup. My injury wasn't remotely close and as serious asLivingstons, but the same idea. My knee buckled inward and I was immediately in pain afterwards. It's swelled up a good amount right now and I've beendoing the RICE treatment to it. I'm not able to extend my leg out due to the swelling and pain. How long should the swelling/pain last for? How often doyou recommend icing it? What kind of injury do you think I sustained? I'm not able to see a doctor until Thursday so any advice til then would be helpful.Thanks.

Best case scenario you're looking at a knee sprain. Where exactly does it hurt? Outer, Inner, inside? Press on the different ligaments and the one that issprained should yield pain (unless it's the ACL or PCL where you have to rotate to test).
Take a look at this drawing.

When I sprained my lateral ligament (also playing ball) it took me about 4 weeks to fully heal.

Worst case scenario you may have torn a ligament or a meniscus. If you don't see progress within 2 weeks, I'd go see a physician.

Might be a meniscus tear.

They usually can heal on their own but it takes upwards of 4 months. Most tears do not require surgery.
I'd go and get it checked if you can. Medicine is expensive nowadays so it's tough.

To be honest I'd lay off all sports where there is significant impact to the knee (namely jumping and pivoting). until it heals.

it's ok. i'm fat as hell.

Since you have a good amount of swelling, take anti-inflammatory drugs like Advil or Ibuprofen, not Tylenol. Continue with the RICE method and then go see yourDOC asap. They'll probably refer you to a sports medicine doc who will do some movement exams and make a preliminary diagnosis and give you some crutchesor a brace. After that, it looks like you'll get an MRI and see an orthopedic doctor based on the MRI results.

To answer your questions: 1) the swelling may last up to several weeks, 2) ice it every hour or so, 3) injury could be anything, but since your knee buckledinward, you probably hurt your MCL, which resides on the inner side of your knee. Depending on what level of torque occurred on your knee, you could havefurther tearing of other stuff (meniscus or ACL, etc). But don't freak out because you'll have to wait until the MRI to know conclusively anyway. Whenthis happened to me, I was freaking out because I was asking about all the possible scenarios and what not. Started thinking about the worst case and all that, and started freaking out. I'll stop my story there, if you have any more questions, shoot me a PM.

Get that knee looked at and best of luck.
