If LBJ is there, that might change.

There's no doubt in my mind Wade or Chris Paul would LOVE to play with LBJ, no matter where it is.

After winning the NBA championship, Doc Rivers and the Boston Celtics have reached agreement on a contract extension through the 2010-2011 season, a league source familiar with the deal told Yahoo! Sports. The contract has not been signed, but Celtics officials and Rivers' agent, Lonnie Cooper, are in the process of finishing up the paperwork, the source said. Yahoo

When reached by text message later Tuesday, Rivers confirmed to Yahoo! Sports that he had recently come to terms but didn't want to make "a big deal about it." Yahoo

Kobe Bryant will not have surgery on his right pinkie because recovery would take too long. Bryant has played with damaged ligaments in the finger since February, but said Tuesday that he won't have surgery after seeking opinions from hand specialists. AP/Boston Globe

Bryant: "I have always felt that I can still focus and play at a high level even through various injuries. That's really just part of the game. When the doctors told me recovery from a procedure could be 12 weeks, I just decided now was not the time to have surgery. What it really came down to for me is that I just didn't want to miss any time 'punching the clock' for the Lakers, given all we are trying to accomplish as a team this NBA season. I am just really excited and looking forward to being there with the guys when camp opens in a few weeks. That is a real bonding process and if I can avoid being on the sidelines for that, God willing, I will," said Bryant. KB24.com

The regular season starts in around 7.5 weeks. If Kobe was out 10 weeks, that's not so bad. Missing 12 is obviously a bit worse. And, it could always take more than 12. Could the Lakers still win and hang around for a playoff spot while Kobe was out? If so, Kobe should probably have the surgery now. If not, he's probably doing the right thing in delaying it. And then the worry is if the finger will hold up all season and through the playoffs. InsideHoops.com

Bryant injured his finger in a Feb. 5 game against the New Jersey Nets, jamming it against the body of Jason Kidd. He jammed it several times over the course of the rest of the season, but it did not stop him from earning his first NBA MVP award and leading the Lakers to the NBA Finals. His original plan was to delay surgery until after the Beijing Olympics. After consulting "numerous doctors" he decided against having surgery, however. The Lakers' training camp begins Sept. 27 and their season starts Oct. 28. LA Daily News

The Knicks are exploring trades involving Zach Randolph, but a proposed deal with the Memphis Grizzlies has been dormant for weeks, and might never be revived, according to Knicks officials. "There was a discussion about different formats, and it never got anywhere," Donnie Walsh, the Knicks' president, said Monday. NY Times

The Memphis Commercial Appeal reported last week on its web site that the Knicks were weighing a swap of Randolph for forward Darko Milicic and guard Marko Jaric. According to the report, the only sticking point was whether the Knicks would agree to pay some of the deferred salary in Randolph's contract. He is owed $48 million over the next three seasons. However, others involved in the talks said there was more to the deal than had been reported. NY Times

"It was a conversation I had with these guys a month ago," Walsh said. "We haven't talked recently. For some reason, it was in the Memphis press and everyone in New York acts like it's imminent." NY Times

Walsh has stated repeatedly and emphatically that he wants the Knicks to be under the salary cap in the summer of 2010, when a fantastic crop of stars - including LeBron James, Dwyane Wade and Chris Bosh - will become free agents. To do so, the Knicks will almost certainly have to unload Randolph, who is due $17.3 million in 2010-11. NY Times

Amare Stoudemire is talking about and working on his defense. He declares his passion for the game to be at an all-time high, bringing him to the court morning and night most weekdays. He is raving about his new coach, Terry Porter, and teammates. Arizona Republic

Stoudemire is worry-free about his surgically repaired knees. And his good effort has extended off the court, having just returned from a week in Sierra Leone to be part of a project to rehabilitate water wells that he helped fund. Arizona Republic

Stoudemire's joy comes in finding more basketball potential to tap. Sporting a "frohawk" hairstyle, he acts as his own smack-talking foe ("STAT, you can't miss two in a row, let alone three!") and motivator ("It feels good coming off my hands") as he calls out that he is shooting from "kill spots." Arizona Republic

The 76ers gave Maurice Cheeks his second contract extension in seven months Tuesday, capping a busy summer highlighted by the addition of free agent forward Elton Brand. Cheeks previously signed a one-year extension on Feb. 20. Terms of the latest deal were not disclosed. "I always wanted to be here, no matter what," Cheeks said during a conference call. AP/Toronto Sun

On Sunday, LeBron James, who last season showed up at an Indians playoff game against New York sporting a Yankees cap, was on Dallas' sideline during pre-game warmups before the Browns' season opener against the Cowboys. In full view of Browns players, James, again wearing the Yankees cap and a blue-and-silver T-shirt, chatted with Dallas owner Jerry Jones and hugged Cowboys wide receiver Terrell Owens and cornerback Adam (Pacman) Jones. James has pledged an allegiance to America's Team since he was a kid. AP/Toronto Sun

In Tuesday's Plain Dealer, columnist Phillip Morris questioned James' decision to flaunt his affinity for other teams any chance he gets. "Does Cavaliers superstar James really hate Cleveland that much?" Morris asked. "Does the anointed one really think we're all a bunch of losers? If not, why does No. 23 go out of his way to show his disdain for professional sports teams in Cleveland that don't involve rims and orange balls?" AP/Toronto Sun

James has two years remaining on a contract extension he signed with the Cavaliers in July 2006. His affection for New York has prompted speculation that he intends to sign with either the Knicks or the New Jersey Nets, who are partly owned by his good friend, rap mogul Jay-Z. AP/Toronto Sun

im pretty sure VC/Harris/Yi/Lopez is much better than anything NY has to offer.

As I've said before, LeBron could take any team in the east and put them in the playoffs next year. Talent on a roster is a bonus.
he can, but why the hell would he go to a situation where he would be worse off. Its not like hes going to make a hell of a lot more. Clevelandis going to have just as much cap space as NY and at this point they have more, I hate to say this, talent. I realize that Lebron is good enough to carry ateam, but what does NY have to offer that Cleveland does? Some made up clause in his Nike contract? If thats the case then he is going to NJ where he willactually have a supporting cast. If he leaves Cleveland because he is frustrated with his supporting cast, what makes you think he will go to NY where hissupporting cast will more than likely be even worse?

And do you know how the Knicks will look in 2 years? No. None of us do.

I agree, no one does, but the entire NY Knick plan is to clear cap space, not gather talent. Better hope Danillo Gallinari becomes the nextDirk because that is your only hope of getting LeBron.

If the Nets go after LeBron in 2010, & suceed, I don't see VC being on the team. His contract is up there & if the Nets do landLeBron, his contract will be huge, & they'll obviously look to get other players for him as well. The cast of Yi, Harris, Lopez is a very bright castfor the future. Now, they have time to develope & play together. There is no pressure on them right now, everyone is counting Jersey out. They can gel fora couple years & have a real bright future.

Now, I agree with your little theory on LeBron...but why settle for just getting into the playoffs with a NY team say ( we don't know what they'll looklike by then, but im going off of just now ), but with Jersey, you have a vision on what they'll look like. They've already started building. If youhave Yi, Devin, & Brook experienced & the chemistry they have mixed with LeBron, that team can do some damage.

Who knows where he lands for sure though? As of now these debates are all fun & games cause nobody knows. Its gonna be a topic until it happens. Everylittle thing he does from wearing a certain fitted, to what teams he likes, everything will be a story. We have to wait in see.

The Nets have stayed competitive in recent years. They are definitely looking towards the future and getting rid ofsalary space and getting young players.

What's your honest opinion on Devin Harris? In MY opinion, he will be a SOLID starter, John Starks-esque.

I can't name one players on the Knicks roster right now that I would see as a good teammate for LBJ. I DON'T know how the Knicks will look in two yearsfrom now, but they don't look any better today then they did 2 years ago.

Give Yi some time to develop into the NBA game where he's regularly used, I think he will begin to turn heads this year, but won't be a solidcontributor until next year. VC on my behalf was a mistake to point out, as he will be gone if LBJ DOES come to NJN.

I trust Rod Thorn/Kiki a hell of a lot more than I trust Donnie/Dolan/Isiah.

EDIT: As for the opinion that LBJ can take ANY east team to the Playoffs, I don't think that's possible with the current Knicks. Take whoever you wantoff of the roster to make LBJ's contract fit, and I still don't think they can get it done.

and keep in mind that in 2010 the Cavs will only have two players under contracts. Here is the current cap situations for both teams

Cleveland

New York

Right now New York will probably have about 40 million dollars of Salaries in 2010 while Cleveland will have about 13.5 million saying Lebron opts out. Thecurrent salary cap is 58 million so that leaves NY with about 20 million to work with and Cleveland with 45 million. And to add to it, Cleveland can go overthe cap to sign Bron.

Cleveland IS in a better situation to sign Bron than NY is.
