i'm not into skating like i used to be...i seldom do it anymore

when i was there was i think 2 or 3 companies that actually construct the actual decks and most brands in the skate industry had their decks made by them andthen they just did a screen print graphic

so, quality wise all the brands are comparable and some are exactly the same as one another

i think powell may have made their own decks

people like certain brands mostly for reasons like the image the brand conveys or the riders they sponsor

when i used to buy decks i wasn't brand specific...i only rode decks from brands that had a lil' more concave because they won't break as easy

eventually i just bought only powell mini logo decks (powells blank decks) 'cause they were cheaper

by the way, don't bother w/ colored trucks...just gonna cost you extra money and they really look stupid if you ask me

and i only rode black wheels after awhile 'cause i hated when i was riding white wheels and got black plague (from skating a black top surface) and/oryellow fever (when they turn yellow after getting dirty...they never will be white again)

no hate, but a lot of skaters prefer things skater owned and operated

forgot to mention...

i don't know if any brands are still doing it but for awhile it seemed like every brand had their little gimmick construction technology for some of theirdecks

i think element had something like featherweight where some of the plies were thinner or maybe weren't solid all the way through to make the deck lighterbut at the same time that would make the deck not as sturdy

the brands under the NHS roof (Santa Cruz, Creature) had one where a few of their plies were a little bit thicker to make it stronger (which obviously made thedeck a lil' heavier) and i had a creature deck w/ this construction which lasted me longer than any other deck would have

There really is a difference tho. But you're right there are major distributions like Dwindle I think it was called for example. But I can tell you I feltthe difference in all my boards from Shorty's,Citystars, X-Games (lol), AWS, Element (hated it), Blind(didn't like these either). Actually, my favoritedeck was my AWS blank my Shorty's had crazy pop tho.

True..

and whoever said blank deck + good trucks = wack is crazy. there are plenty of companies that make blanks that are the same exact board you pay 60 bucks forbecause of some graphic. if you skate a lot and actually go hard enough to break a board you can appreciate being able to grab 3 decks for the price of onedeck with a graphic.

I really don't skate anymore at all but in the past I've skated Blind (Gideon Choi FTW), Manik (Seattle based company. Don't know how big they arenow), Girl, and I currently own an Element deck. Skated a couple blanks in my day too.

aside from shape, size, concave there really isn't

and the fact that you had an x-games deck is a tell all

shorty's don't have significantly better wood or anything that would make the pop better than other brands...it may have seemed like it had more pop'cause the tail was steeper or shorter

^ The sold Maniks at my shop before they closed. My friend got that Ghostface one they did.

I have had this Girl Deck for a while now, not skated like i used to. The best one I had was a Zero deck, had lots of pop and didn't seem heavy like theGirl.

Do they still make Vision and/or Powell-Peralta decks? That's what I had back in the day. (late '80s-very early 90s) I cant even remember some of theother brands that were popular back then.

Wow.....not to flame but how can you work at a shop and not know skating?

With that being said, I am like a super dork with skating but I suck mad balls at skating so go figure. But this is a unanimous consensus, but the most popularboards are DLX brands, crailtap brands, and kayo will get a pass but not everyone would ride their stuff. Other brands are 50/50 like DNAboards (Alien and Habitat) and Blitz (Baker) but please do not get Element decks or some Birdhouse crap unless you have a shop full of kiddies. But realskaters, it is all about wood and not graphics. DLX has the best wood out imo. Stocl up on Krooked, Anit Hero and REAL decks and you should have a legit shop.
