Stan Van Gundy joined Dan LeBatard on the Ticket in Miami Wednesday, and at the end of the first hour (28 minute mark here), our SVG-David Stern-NBA Countdown story was read on the air. Stan Van Gundy took a deep breath and responded:

“No one at ESPN will tell us what happened. Certainly the NBA office isn’t going to tell us what happened. One of the quotes from ESPN in there – we had discussions, but couldn’t agree on a role … as is usual, that’s a bunch of BS from ESPN.

We actually did agree on a role, but then they came back and pulled that. That’s when we knew something was up.

Nobody is going to give a straight answer because … that’s just the way a lot of people operate … nobody there has the guts to say anything, so that’s what you deal with.

What I find fascinating … you have to give David Stern and the NBA a lot of credit … ESPN pays the league, and then the league tells them what to do. It’s more ESPN’s problem. You gotta have no balls whatsoever to pay someone hundreds of millions of dollars and let them run your business.

Just say what happened. Who cares? Who cares if I’m on there or not. Just come out and say this is what we decided and why … [ESPN's quote] that’s just a flat out lie. Why would you do that? I don’t understand. We agreed on something, you changed your mind and pulled the offer. Don’t say we couldn’t come to an agreement. We did.”

We’re looking forward to ESPN’s reply tomorrow.

Good for him

I wasn't going to post, but oh well. The NBA has every right to have say in how their product is presented. Is it a dbag move, maybe. SVG needs to learn to shut the **** up. There's a reason why he ultimately fails & he needs to go away to figure things out. It happened with his brother & Jeff has carved out a nice niche for himself as an analyst on TV, one of the better ones I might ad.

You may not like SVG but he is 100% right in this regard.

ESPN has been on BS for a while but it seems to be getting worse every year

I really like the Van Gundy's. I love the honesty. Most of the time I agree with what Jeff says during the games and I thought SVG was a real good coach

Van Gundy would have been awesome, dude gives no dambs, versus this terrible show with Wilbon and Berry agreeing with what ever indecipherable babblings that fall out of Magics mouth in between handfuls of popcorns.

I love me some JVG :lol :hat

Dude is never gonna be a company man. Unlike Mike Breen's *** kissing self.

Damn, Wrong Van Gundy :lol. Still....

ESPN pulls stuff like this all the time

Yeah, ESPN isn't the most reputable company. The only reason Suzy Kolber still works there is because she was sleeping with a married executive & had a baby with him on the DL. Dude is still married to.

I had a family friend that worked IT there for several years & said there is so much ill stuff going on there it's not even funny.

*Patiently waits for RyGuy* :lol

Stan Van Gundy is too much of a loose cannon for ESPN to handle. He speaks TOO much truth. If he had the clout of Bobby Knight, he'd be hired in an instant. Too many "yes" men on that network. Speaking of Bobby Knight, him being on ESPN is another topic for another day. Dude sucks.

Stan the man :hat

ESPN literally has the worst analyst this would have been a home-run hire and a breath of fresh air.

In other news, Gottlieb called out ESPN too the other week for shoving Tebow down everybody's throats, pause.

He spells out what's wrong with ESPN's coverage

They're feeding us storylines that the NBA wants. It just seems to forced. Halftime shows feature Magic and Wilbon reading off scripts basically.

Rock clapping gif.

Good for him for addressing this, even though it won't do him any good in the long run. Interested to see how this plays out

yeah but what else can we expect. ESPN is a sports network that provides service to the masses it has to be almost totally sensationalist and feed the casual fan exactly what they want to hear or in some cases go so hard against the grain it will spark interest. It is what it is at this point and I just watch ESPN to be entertained, not informed.

I don't expect anything else from ESPN, but it can be done. TNT is successful because the crew isn't just doing fluff pieces during the breaks.

The problem with ESPN is that they seem to be the NBA's mouthpiece, which is going beyond what a sports network should be doing. They storylines they push and the way they do it, it makes them sound like a TV version of the NBA.com home page. Market the stars the NBA wants to market to death.

Why is espn still giving pieces to Kenny Mayne. The only people that find his stuff funny is him & his mother...

Can I get some back story? I'm a bit lost on what this is about. I'm assuming ESPN offered SVG a job and then the NBA said no don't hire him so ESPN pulled the offer?

I'm guessing they couldn't handle both Van Gundy brothers and all that real talk about the league.

something like that

used to watch ESPN during football season but now its only NFL Network. Deion & Irvin bring the laughs all night

tbWhat i dont get is why does espn go OFF on the nfl but not the nba.

They went super hard on replacement refs and reported vilmas side of things even aloud his lawyer time to speak on air

The Van Gundys are so real man and possess a wealth of basketball knowledge. I have the utmost respect for those two.

ESPN is a news network. The more people watch, the more they make. If you ever listen to Colin Cowherd, he'll talk about ratings and what rates highest amongst viewers and listeners, and basically says "That's what I'm gonna talk about." If it didn't pull listeners and viewers, they wouldn't talk about those things.

I have no doubt that the NBA wouldn't want SVG on ESPN. The Van Gundys are too honest :lol I'd like to meet their parents. Gotta be standup individuals.
