Stanford Cuts Tuition for Some Students
By Associated Press 11:56 AM CST, February 20, 2008

PALO ALTO, Calif. - Attending Stanford University next year will be a lot more affordable for someundergraduate students.

The university said Wednesday it plans to eliminate tuition for students with annual family incomes totaling less than $100,000. It also will pay most room andboard for students with families making less than $60,000.

Financial aid director Karen Cooper says the move comes as middle-income parents express concern about paying for a Stanford education.
Stanford tuition is expected to rise to $36,000 in the fall. Room and board will cost about $11,000. About a third of theuniversity's 6,700 undergraduates are expected to qualify for the tuition break.

.

I'm glad to see a school like Stanford taking a step like this.
Who do you me by "their"?
Stanford is a private school, they can let anyone they want in, and they can provide loans/funding for ANYONE.
Yes its a great step that they're lifting ONE of the financial burdens that a school like Stanford has.

But realistically, how many students in California will this apply to? Unfortunately there is a heavy correlation between parents income level and and theplace their son/daughter goes to school.
Maybe out of state students will reap the benefits of this change more than others. I'd love to see a breakout of what the parents of Stanford studentsmake annually.

That's not as true as you would think. I have a lot of friends here who have been coming free under the old system. Previously, it has beenthat any student whose parents make under 55k comes completely free and then financial aid is prorated from there. Everyone ends up getting somethign thoughbecause so much money is floating around here. One of my friends whose dad is worth about 4 billion dollars even got about 6k/year. But like I said, contraryto popular belief, there are many kids here who don't come from much both in state and out of state since it's a private school and their is nodifference in tuition. Admission has been completely need blind, so it has never been a factor. If you're good enough to get in, they'll come up wihtthe money somehow

Welp...once it hits the Ivies, then I'll rejoice
Some of them have similar programs. I know princeton is great in FA.

Stanford may not be the best socially
What dorms/houses did you live in because I certainly haven't had the same experience.

I was there when they began the less than $40,000 = free tuition deal. I had about 85% scholly my first 3 years and the last year I went there basically scotfree.....I was very proud to have an employed guardian at the time.

I'm glad they stepped it up. Stanford may not be the best socially, but you can't get any better when it comes to financial aid and academics.

Yea, come to think of it UPENN stepped their FA game up. But these other eastcoast institutions need to get with the program.

@ the BS package NYU offeredme last year

Human Biology/Pre-Med

Cedro Mirrielees Suites.....The experience is very different for everyone. I think it depends on where you come from and what you become accustomed to prior toattending a school.
