Steve Francis Is Retired, But Still Cocky
by Mike Prada • Aug 4, 2010 2:52 PM EDT

(This is a couple days old, but I just saw it. Apologies).

Once upon a time, Steve Francis was the next big thing in this area. Well, sort of. Born in Takoma Park, Francis was a huge star for Maryland for one season, big enough to the point where he brought the program the kind of big-prospect buzz it rarely gets. Then, he acted like a prima donna at the 1999 Draft, complained his way to Houston, had several good years and then disappeared off the face of the earth.

Since it is their genre, SLAM Online decided to run with a "Remember Steve Francis" story, which was largely great. The only problem is that it included this line from Francis.
The doc's last 10 minutes could just as easily be about Francis' legacy, a subject he's crystal clear on. "To be the greatest player out of the DC/Maryland area since Len Bias," he states, "Kevin Durant can't say that. Michael Beasley can't say that. None of those guys can say that. I am the best player to come out of DC since [Bias]."

Interesting point of view, Steve. Hey, where's your rap track from a famous D.C. rapper? Funny how I didn't notice it. - http://dc.sbnation.com/20...d-basketball-best-player

Since Bias, (and I don't care how many years he's been in the NBA), that title of the "best player to come out of DC" belongs to Kevin Durant. No if's, and's, or but's about it. If Francis wasn't such a selfish malcontent, maybe people would RESPECT his opinion on this. He's coming off sounding bitter for whatever the reason.

What has KD accomplished that Francis didn't?

Not a thing.

I really don't see how he's wrong as of this moment. Can it (and will it) change in a year or 2? yeah.

I wouldn't put Durant above Steve just yet. Steve put in some solid years DoubleJ. Don't forget too quickly. Durant will pass him, but as of now? Nah. If he died today, Francis would have had a better career.

But since Bias, Grant Hill and David Robinson should be 1 and 2. Steve is 3rd.

I tend to forget about DR when talking about players from the area.

He's right, KD hasn't done enough.......yet and i'm quite confident he will. Franchise was my favorite player out of DC until KD. The self alley-oop was so mind blowing to me

You're 100% right, DC. Steve Francis did put up some good #'s in his career. But I have no problem saying that right now, Kevin Durant even in his short time as a pro, has been the best (never thought about the DR angle...so maybe KD is 1A.) to come out of the DC area. He's got the most talent of the bunch....he's a phenom.

he's a better player. Steve didn't say "i'm the most accomplished player to come from DC".. he said he was the best.

KD could retire right now and he'd go own as a better player than Franchise because we've seen both of them play.

Get the @%%+ outta here.

Kevin Durant is better than Steve Francis.

I'm not even going to discuss how OBVIOUS that is.

Screw accomplishments.

He is a better BASKETBALL PLAYER than Steve Francis. How is that debatable?
