Ok it's 2009, this isn't the days of the good ol general store where you go in and pay with cash and cash only.

The majority of customers prefer to use their debit or credit cards and it's a huge inconvience when a store either doesn't accept credit or debit orthey try to punish you for paying with debit or credit by charging you anywhere from 50 cents to 2 dollars to use your card or when theres a minimum amount ofmoney you need to spend in order to be able to use your debit or credit card.

all in all i'm pretty certain stores get charged whenever they use their debit or credit card terminals but its pretty petty and cheap of them to take itout on their paying customers.

I never got charged extra for payin' with my card...but the gas station always has a $5.00 minimum.

Its actually illegal to charge for the debit swipe. Thats why there IS a minimum!!

As a close friend of a business owner, i can tell you that the reason why they charge is because the bank that issues the debit machine charges.

Debit Swipe charge (for store): $.80

Credit Swipe (for store): % (FTL).

Thats why.

I never went into a store that charge more for a debit/credit swipe. But I HATE restaurants that don't accept cards. We went to some place in Chinatown andrealized when the check came they didn't take debit/credit. Needless to say, they were pissed when they saw a 10% only tip

No1 had cash on us, weall scrapped everything we had for the bill lol.

I didn't know it was illegal, but I know that when they do that, it's violation of their contract with the credit card company.
If you're feeling extra salty, you can contact the CC companies and let em know about which merchants are doing that.

almost every gas station and cornerstore in los angelescounty would be in trouble with the credit card companies then

I was trying to buy a some mint before my job interview. It was 1.49 cents and the lady said she would have to charge me $2 if the order is under $4

And I wasn't trying to buy 2 more packs and stuff them into my pocket before my interview either

Gas stations in L.A. do no doubt, (and thats like the number one place where credit/debit card frauds are commited)

Carls Jr. and some liquor stores.

Probably, OR they can offer "discounts" for using cash, which is the loophole.
Let's say it's $3.10/gal but if you pay with cash, it's only $2.95.

I've heard of it but never actually been charged. It's the norm out here really to not have cash, most places don't even have a minimum. On FortSill especially, it's not at all uncommon to see dudes buy like a candy bar and swipe it on their card. I've done it and do it all the time too.

had that problem only at certain gas stations

what i don't need is to pay more for gas

as for the supermarkets i go to, they charge me if my total doesn't exceed something like $5 or $10..

ATMs are the worse!!!

waste $2-4 on getting my OWN money out!!!

thats why i go to the store, buy gum or something and get cash back instead of just throwing cash away...
