a trick for reading long passages is to read the first and last sentence of each paragraph and get the GIST of what the author is talking about. in your own words write a few words of what the main idea was for each paragraph.
graders have less than a minute to grade your essay, so yes size matters. the longer your essay the better. use a lot of transition sentences like... however, while, although, in addition, furthermore.. another example, reason, point... i agree with the statement blah blah blah, etc.
