Because he was the biggest free agent in the offseason and the Magic had the money and wanted to make a big signing, ergo Rashard got a max deal.

Are you mad Mr. Knick fan? Are you still upset about Chicago being mentioned in the running for Lebron?
He still doesn't deserve 20 million a year.

the magic vastly overpaid for him (obviously). when he was a free agent, no other team offered anywhere NEAR the money the magic did. the magic were literally bidding against themselves. they could have signed him for 20-30 mil less, EASY

Who could have foreseen, you mentioned me being a Knicks fan, which of course means any opinion I have is null and void. AND OF COURSE!!! Lebron totally belongs in a thread about Rashard.
No one would argue he deserves 20 million a year, but thankfully for him and 70% of players after they sign a huge deal, the NBA doesn't pay you based on your current stats. You get paid whatever the market dictates or how much teams are willing to spend.
It's easy for someone who doesn't pay attention to look at stats and contracts, then ask questions about why something doesn't make sense. Rashard is giving Orlando what they should have expected, he was a SF and they moved him to PF, they shouldn't have expected him to become a shot blocker or 10 rebound a game player. They wanted him to be a stretch 4 who could shoot the 3, which he does in bunches. He's overpaid, but that's how it works sometimes.

I know what happened when he got traded from Seattle, but that isn't my point.
Sure he was averaging more points ... but he wasn't/shouldn't have been/isn't a max player.
It STILL doesn't make sense, they DIDN'T have to pay him that much. So my question is, why did they?

As mentioned... They wanted to pay him that much to make sure they got him. They were looking towards the future & felt he should be part of the plan. With how they've done since they got him, you can see a drastic change if they never did get him in the 1st place... Which could've happened if they didn't throw that money his way.
