I don't know if America will ever get it right. We're better than most countries, that I have no doubt about. But there is something lurking in the shadows that I didn't know was there until social media came about. Now I'm just sad. I used to believe racism was dying by the day. What a fool I was. |I

THIS. So much this. i can't believe how much the last few years have changed my perspective on this stuff. as a whole, we're not progressing. not one bit it feels like.

I disagree. I read it somewhere and was statistically backed up. I believe in it as well. The world isn't getting worse, our information is just getting better. We are actually as well off as we've ever been. Obviously we still have alot of work to do though.

when you say "well off as we've ever been"...can you explain? just curious and want to make sure i'm not misinterpreting

He means that we're improving as a society. The bigotry has always existed, it's just that now they have more channels to communicate than they've ever had before.

People always like to say, the world is so terrible, we're regressing. That's probably not the case though. The world has always been terrible, it's just that with the advent of technology we're more aware of what's going on.

yeah that's what i figured. wanted to make sure.

i don't think CP is arguing that though. he's saying we're not as far ahead as he originally thought we might have been. i think?

My wife told me a story this weekend.

Little girl's birthday, turnin 10. Her mother and boyfriend picked that night to hold her down and rape her. Cousin helps. Later, cousin goes crazy, attacks mother/boyfriend. Cousin kills little girl, hacks body to pieces, lights it on fire.

I'm going to pass on you saying we're as well off as ever been.

*Note, I may have details fuzzy on cousin or boyfriend, or whatever. But that was gist.

^ok, but you're acting like people just started doing those things. They haven't. Atrocities are nothing new. We just have more ways of finding out about them.

Put me in the camp of not believing we're the best we've ever been. For some maybe, but for a lot of POC it's status quo. Hell a bigot is a viable candidate for the white house like it's the 60s again. Feels like we're going backwards hence the make our country great again.

So many people refuse to respond to what Kaepernick said, they instead want to tear him down as the messenger. Embarrassing way to avoid the real issue at hand.
Yep.

I've seen so much stuff the last few days, I don't even know what's what anymore. It's just American's arguing and fussing over a laundry list of issues, some connected, some not, some racist, some....probably still racist. I'm not smart enough to decipher who's who anymore.

But I've seen excellent points made (Twitter, FB, here on NT, TV, radio, etc)

White people want black people to protest peacefully. Colin protests peacefully. White people: No, not like that.

America isn't keeping up it's end of the bargain. Throw this man out the country.
Make America great again (inferring it's not great already) Vote this man for president.

Black lives matter. White folk counter, ALL lives matter. Ok, please show me Asians getting killed in the streets by cops. Show me Hispanics being gunned down. Show me whites being gunned down. That's what I thought.

Drew Brees got pretty destroyed by none other than Martin Luther King Jr. Basically word for word, the "White moderate" Saying just enough to say nothing at all. Truly on point.

Me myself, I wouldn't mess around with sitting during the Anthem. Thas me. But I ain't mad at Colin for doin it. Doesn't hurt me, or my family, or my neighbors, or anybody really. Peaceful as you can get. But people up in arms.

Kill a gorilla, white people pissed. Kill an unarmed black teenager, well, he shouldn't have been a thug..........

Layers and layers of broken people. Hate to disagree with Russ and his wisdom, but love ain't gonna fix it. Guns ain't gonna fix it. Laws likely won't even fix it. People have to fix it. Sadly, money might have to fix it. (when you start hurting right white folks pockets, change will soon follow)

damn ol man beautifully said.

Yes.

Few years back, I believed our generation was nearing the end of racism.

Grandparents lived in that era.
Parents coming out of that era.
We certainly out of that era.
Our kids even further removed, etc.

I believed, fully, we would see the end of racism soon.

9/11 brought everyone together.
Obama becomes first black president.

"We" were growing as a country. I believed it.

Then Twitter came on. (And dozens of other sites of that ilk) Then I saw people argue FOR a white cop in Ferguson. Or the dude in Miami. Fruitvale New York. And on and on we go.

I'm an idiot.

We are as well off as we've ever been. If we were given the choice of what era we would like to live in, it would have to be this one. People are living longer, a lot of the diseases of yesteryears have been eradicated. Communication has become instantaneous. We live in a globalized society where we know more about the rest of the world than we ever have. Name me another era where we "had it better."

Trey ohh five - yeah that's what i was getting at.

CP1708 - statistically there is currently the least amount of crime in the history of mankind. Stealing, rape, murder ect. To weed out every sick individual will take forever yes. To become actually civilized to the point where there's no need to police, prisons, and war. Yes that will take forever too. But we despite the internet leading you to believe the world is up in flames, it's not true at all. We've just never been so hyper connected. Basic human rights goes hand in hand with this.

i grew up in the 90s. something went down in the community, it stayed local unless it was huge then it would be national news. now, some random high school fight trends on twitter and those involved are on a worldwide spot light. i agree that we as a society are much more aware of whats going on in the world even on events the news might not think are worthy. these fights for rights are still going on as they were 25 yrs ago but now you have cameras pointing at times when one thinks no one is watching. how far we have progressed will be told by the years to come but clearly we are still far away |I

I could be talked into that. You might be right.

Thought I saw The Wire talk about cases bein cleared, but really cases were just bein ignored or not filed or whatever to keep crime numbers low for elections. But, maybe the numbers you're talkin about are legit, hope so.

i just pray that this world is better when my daughter is old enough...**** is scary out here man.

i just wish the best now for her and her's

racism was becoming slowly becoming better in this country and it all went back to **** when the ripple effect of George Zimmerman happened IMO
