Depp and Hollywood pigeonholed him. Same role in every movie over the last 10 years. Quirky, funny, sometimes rude or unlikeable, but an overall lovable antihero. They tried to make this flick piggyback on the success of Pirates (which died off 5+ years ago). They clearly came up short. Disney has been greenlighting some turds the last few years.
