When did it become cooler the **** on something than it is to like it?

We run around depressed, feeling alone. The Internet has breed a culture of negativity.

We all speak the ideals of individuality, yet assert our personal individuality by telling everyone else what's wrong with them...as an individual.

We often speak as if our words are any more prophetic than anyone else's.

We speak as if our words don't hurt.

We correct people as if we are ideals of perfect grammar/diction, forgetting the only 'correct' communicAtion is the kind which can be understood.

Honesty with self is lacking, while insecurity and fear run the lives of most.

We say 'I don't need to be accepted by anyone,' afraid to share our own ideas for fear of being cast out by someone.

We call others sheep, while wearing/posting/reading/believing whatever the coolest trend is

We act as if every idea we have is original, not realizing we probably haven't had an original thought in our entire lives, just untraceable tidbits we've pick up from other people.

We say really mean things to each other because we're terrified that whatever we see in them is really a part of ourself and to berate another for crimes you've committed somehow lessen your pain.

False arrogance masks our insecurity. Hate masks our jealousy. Feigned individuality masks our fear. Harsh words to others mask out personal failures.

Be honest with yourself, if you find a trait about yourself you don't like, work on it.

Don't fear the crowd, easier said than done.

For every mean thing you wish to say, say something nice first.

Be you, don't worry if its 'uncool'

Stop making such a big deal about originality and individuality, honesty, you're probably neither if those

We get one go round, don't spend it fighting/hating/fearing spend it living, spend it free.

The internet age is still brand new and in its infancy.

The world is COMPLETELY different in a HUGE way than it was 15 years ago.

The internet getting this level of mainstream is like when electricity became a common thing, or the industrial revolution hitting.

There are going to be growing pains, as individuals and societies have to come to terms with new ideas and concepts while being forced to realize which old and loved concepts were actually false or misguided the whole time.

Right now society's going through that akward puberty phase and since young people are the most vocal segment of population, the biggest consumers who also completely change up their opinions from moment to moment, we're blaming them for behavior that is going on with all Earthlings as a whole.

Yo, pass that. :smokin

But, in my opinion, the internet didn't breed any more hate or negativity than there was before. It has simply provided a perceived level of anonmity, and has allowed for people to express their feelings to a broad audience.

Nothing said online would have gone unsaid behind closed doors.

I agree OP. But I think we can't have just nice people in the world, there wouldn't be balance. It's tough to understand but we need "bad" people as well to have balance.

Can't imagine a world without 'bad' but that doesn't mean we need it, a philosopher far smarter than I could probably describe a world without 'bad'.

In said world there could still be choice and freedom, but because people's ideas of right and wrong would eventually collide, I, personally, couldn't imagine a world in which something's happen which some people consider bad.

For example, killing the terminally ill, at their request. Some say they aren't in proper condition so it would be 'bad' to kill them, others say ' their adults and in pain, it's selfish to force them to live in pain. ' is letting the due 'good' or 'bad?' I'm not smart enough to make that choice.

I guess this is your opinion OP?

I do not surround myself with negativity...i don't really social network online outside of NT. So i don't really see this that much in real life....people need to get out side and stop taking the internet so seriously.

No fb for two years
No twitter for one
No ig ever
No gamer tag ever
No social media, outside NT period.

Outside of NT I don't 'do' the Internet.

This is an observation of how Internet culture has given people a platform to be overly mean to each other without repercussion. As a consequence people carry those same mindsets into the real world.

In order to 'stand out' online you must find a way to be more outrageous than the next. It also creates the idea 'I'm not the only one that feels this way, so it must be ok' without understanding these are people's online personas, personas they often adopt to fit in online. I'm not so arrogant to say I don't feel the pressure to 'choose sides' to be a general douche, but I work hard on changing opposed to not acknowledging.

As someone actively keeps himself from the social media world, to his detriment, I see the folly of the Information Age.

I guess il just take your word for it :\

I honestly don't come into contact with people being overtly mean....like you post a pic online you get a bunch of "you ugly" comments....but its the internet who takes it seriously like that....when you walk around outside no one ever says (in my experience) "you ugly" for no unprovoked reason.

This just seems a little over dramatized to me. Its really not that bad.....but i say things like that and the thread about "knockout" showed up and my jimmies were all sorts of rustled

I've been on Twitter for a few months and damn, I never seen so much hate than the hate that is on Twitter.

Do you hear the way highschool kids talk to each other nowadays? And I'm not talking isolated incidents. Me and my friends said some disrespectful stuff to each other, but we had lines that people did not cross. Two kids were talking at this HS basketball game I was at, they were sitting in front of me, one dude said "I'll rape your mother" in reference to some video game, I think...I got a little rustled, I went and got a hotdog and changed seats. I couldn't believe they were saying that to their friends.

A lot of what I said comes from Neitzsche, btw, not really "my" ideas, his ideas applied to a modern context. He spoke of peoples fears and how they hide themselves to gain approval from those in your society, in modern times that is exemplified through the interwebz. You can create a persona, literally "hiding" yourself behind a keyboard, getting that instant approval by likes, reps, up votes, karma, etc.
