the thread about nothing...

Haven't been sleeping well this past week due to the hospital room temperatures but apparently my eyes look so cooked now the psychologist straight up asked me if I've been on illicit substances the past week.
At least the nurses seem to disagree with her assessment. The one I get along with the most immediately started laughing when I asked her about it and said she thinks I just have dead eyes by default and always look high as a result :smh::lol:
...Thanks?
What are you in the hospital for?

What are you in the hospital for?
Rehab
Been here since April 15th to try and reduce my Tramadol (opioid) prescription from 500mg/day (25% over the daily maximum) all the way down to 0.
I'm currently already down to 25mg a day so at the current rate, I'll be down to 0 for the first time in around 10-12 years or something. I eventually got a Tramadol prescription all those years ago due to the onset of chronic pain in my lower legs sometime after my partial lung removal and the onset of my hormone condition. The doctors were never really able to put a diagnosis on it so after trying all sorts of NSAID medications and some alternatives like Lyrica/Pregabalin, they eventually just gave me opioids. At some point I started abusing them on and off but never really bothered withdrawing all the way down, only back down to my prescribed daily dosage. My legs aren't very appreciative of the current dosage but I think it'll be manageable. I've only ever abused prescriptions and would never consider obtaining them illegally so I think it'll work out.
Even before I had any sort of medication at all, I've heard the "dead eyes" remark plenty of times so I don't think it was ever particularly noticeable. You can function just fine on opioids, especially since Tramadol is one of the least potent. It's definitely a fair question or suspicion from the staff, I just wasn't really expecting it because I'm almost down to 0 and don't feel like I look particularly different aside from being tired.

It's not exclusively a rehab facility, technically this ward I'm at is part of a psychiatric hospital.
The target group for this audience is people with autism or psychosis but I got put here because there's no arbitrary maximum stay.
I was originally going to be placed in one of the other wards that focuses more specifically on short term rehab but the maximum stay was 3 months and had a longer waiting list.

At the current rate of tapering down, I should hopefully be 'clean' in around a month, assuming all goes well. The tapering down has been relatively smooth up until this last stretch and I'm guessing the step down to 0 will be extra rough.
Based on discussions with the staff, I assume I'll probably be staying here for another month or 2 after I get down to 0.

I know the neurology department has also asked to monitor my epileptic seizure frequency both during and after the withdrawal process so that's probably part of why an exit plan hasn't been brought up at all yet. I take a nuclear dosage of anti-epileptics and still get between 2 and 4 seizures a month so that kinda needs a resolution.
I already take the maximum daily dosage of Keppra, which is a notoriously potent anti-epileptic, and 200mg of Vimpat (another anti-epileptic) on top of that so they can't really ramp that up much without completely frying my brain. Aside from the occasional short term memory issues, I don't really have any side effects from those 2 but that's already extremely lucky according to the neurologists.

They've already tried adding a third anti-epileptic before but it felt like dementia so it was quickly discontinued. I'd be watching football matches but then immediately forget right after that I even watched a match at all.
Given how Spurs played this season, that was sometimes a blessing in disguise but not exactly a recipe for being able to function.

Appreciate you opening up on a private matter. Hope you pull through

Thanks fam, all things considered I'm kinda surprised things have been going so well.
I used to hide my addiction from literally everyone, even my closest friends, up until meeting a fellow addict through my volunteer job at a mental health non-profit. She was very open about her substance abuse and we're very close friends now so I kinda learned to share and stopped feeling embarrassed about it.
Nowadays I'm pretty comfortable sharing and all my friends now know this has been a thing for over a decade.

The vibes at this hospital are surprisingly good as well. Some patients are very quiet and barely say a word, after all this ward's target audience is mainly people with autism or psychosis, but there's some cool people here who are pretty sociable.
We have a decent amount of freedom too. Some of us patients went to go see The Odyssey earlier this week because we get to justify it under "group-connecting activity/therapy."
There's the typical group therapy stuff but also some less conventional things like going to bars (under supervision without alcohol), playing football outside, ...

Outside activities (only allowed outside of regular therapy hours, albeit with a curfew) are kinda like work-related tax deductions here. If you can justify it as some sort of group activity or whatever, staff will probably allow it.
We got to stream the World Cup matches in the staff's meeting room with a large projector screen for example because we argued it fell under a group-connecting activity. Technically our curfew is at 11pm but we got to stream the matches as long as the matches started before midnight.

It's really not as bad as it sounds when you hear the word rehab. I expected my stay here to be horrible and extremely boring but I'm having a good time for the most part.

Advice, please.

The story: A close friend, who lives 2 hrs away, invited me to join them and our other friends [who also live up there] for a birthday dinner tonight at a restaurant.

The dilemma: their (my close friend and my other friend who are a couple) kid misbehaves in restaurants (and also gets our other friends' kid riled up too). Last time I went to see them in April, the kid would hop on the chairs, scream from time to time, crawl under the table/s, run or wander around outside of where we sit, chew/suck on some playtoys as a joke, and bring that toy to another empty table to play with it until another family was brought over to be seated at that table.

Two worst parts, 1) I kept telling either of my two friends of that kid "hey, your kid is running around" or "hey, your kid is crawling on the floor," and 2) the kid JUST recovered from Hand/Foot/Mouth.

The question: suck it up and go visit my friend for her birthday dinner knowing I'll be irritated at the situation, or pass and send her a gift?

😂🤣🤷🏿‍♂️ if they aren’t that concerned, what does their kid being unruly have to do w/you tho? if it is going to bother you to the point you can’t/don’t/won’t enjoy seeing your friend(s) you likely be better off skipping it, you are all adults & from the description it doesn’t seem like it’s on the level of family obligation for you to show face, so i’d imagine your friend would be cool w/a ‘happy birthday’ call/text

I guess Im cheap
cause I always looked at the economics of ordering food (even without fees)
and Im like, I can buy groceries for 7 meals instead

dont get me wrong
once in a while its a nice treat
Yeah, we dont all fall for it and its precisely due to the reasons listed.

Don't get me wrong. I will pay for a dominos delivery every now again. But I have never and dont ever plan on involving a 3rd party app for delivery of my dinner.

Furthermore, if the restaurant didn't offer delivery pre-pandemic (mcdonals, burger king, ihop, chipotle, olive garden, chili's, etc etc) , im not using their "delivery service" cuz it's just ******* door dash/Uber eats

ah
