kdawg Im assuming thats a screen print? Is it all stencil work? Do you have any experience with DTG printers? Would you say screen printing is superior to DTG printing? Im thinking about of getting a DTG printer but Im not sure how the print shows on garment.
That just HTV - heat transfer vinyl.
I’ve actually been looking into screenprinting recently - my sister in law is an art professor and often makes shirts with kids in the family that way.
I have a vinyl cutter and that’s the simplest way to do short runs - you just cut it out and then press it - I have a cheap eBay heat press which works well. It means you can only do one colour at a time which limits the design and if you make it too complex it gets thick and sort of plasticky and the largest I can cut is 12” wide. The main downside is durability - they last a while but eventually peel off especially if you put them in the dryer.
I can cut vinyl to make stencils for screenprinting - I just need to get a frame and the ink for that. That lasts better and you can blend colours somewhat - it’s also better for mass producing shirts because once you’ve set it up you can use the stencil repeatedly. For more than one it’s more efficient. Still limited to a single color per screen.
I hadn’t see that printer thing before but that’s very cool. I suppose the advantage of that is scale - it will automate part of the process for multiple colors. You can also blend the colors more easily because it’s printing them on rather than using a screen. The main downside will be the cost but if it’s for a business you’ll offset that by volume. Looks like it would be as durable as screenprinting too.
The other option you have is sublimation - that is a hybrid in that you print the image onto a special material then heat press that on to the garment and it transfers the image. I think the home versions of that require special fabrics - you can’t just do it to a blank shirt. It’s limited in what color shirt you can put it on too.
That’s about the extent of what I know - just by mucking about in my garage.
