I used to do pest control for terminx and orkin for several years. That bed bug check she did is definitely a must in every hotel you ever stay in. Fancy hotels only call when there's a problem...cheap hotels know they are prone to issues so they have regular services scheduled. Plus the high dollar hotels usually have visitors from all over the world bringing there pests from airports. Bed bugs aren't necessarily a sanitation issues like hygiene or cleanliness. They are attracted to the warmth of the body and spread most by traveling, they hitchhike on clothes and luggage, they hide out until the sense the body warmth, mostly start spreading when numerous people come together from different places. They can survive anywhere and aren't attracted to dirt, just YOU!

My wife makes me iron the bed sheets and pillows whenever we stay at a hotel. Is this effective at all?

120 degrees or hotter might kill some and their eggs, mostly the ones on the surface. But if you're seeing them on the surface, it's already too late. They like to hide in crevices and creases. Ironing maybe steaming and vacuuming could be a nice little triple threat. Grab you a little flashlight pull them sheets back and check those bed frames, headboards and seams on the mattress itself. They are hiding and breading until they sense that body warmth.
