Avon was smarter than Stringer in every facet. Nice subtle touch to Avon’s character by referencing The Day of the Jackal. And as much as String thought of himself as above everyone else and Avon’s #2, he doesn’t get the respect he thinks he deserves not only when he is checked at the entrance but also when he barks the order for the new guy to leave but the new guy only does so after Slim Charles gives him the nod.

i don’t think that is what the shows was aiming to portray, which was the thing with the scene where detective mcnulty sees all the books @ string’s spot & comments something like ‘who is/was this guy?’ avon & stringer had different strengths that we’re complimentary but in somewhat different realms despite being from the same place…stringer was just more ‘ambitious’ in terms of wanting to expand outside of the criminality & seeking to be ‘more’ and that ambition blinded him to the point he got outside his body & was willing to be uncharacteristically reckless
