It was probably all about surviving and getting food. I'd assume the walkers all froze or slowed down a whole lot more during that time. They probably kept trying to store food and shacked up in some house for a few months.

I don't even recall any long periods of it being winter in the comics and that being a major factor. I know it snowed a few times and they complained about being cold but nothing compelling due to the weather.

So I think I would've been bored to death if they did given how last season went.

They were trying to gain access to other parts of the prison because there is food, medicine, and weapons there.
