Thinking about learning Italian...need book/computer program suggestions

Not too interested in taking classes to learn the language. I'd rather self-teach myself some of the basics. Does anyone have suggestions on which books and/or self-teach computer programs to use? Is it worth dishing out the $$$ for a Rosetta Stone set?

lol... if you dont know anyone to practice with then or not submerged in it I think its too hard.. I downloaded pimsleur italian lessons but forgot it all because I didnt use it

It will definitely come in handy in that regard. But naw, it's actually out of boredom. Language of my ancestors. It would be cool to add to my repertoire. Wouldn't mind being able to speak a few languages. I do actually know some Italian teachers I could converse with.

So...anyone?

The most important part is being exposed to the language regularly. Flashcards, vocab, reading, watching Italian TV/movies, etc. The textbook I used in college wasn't an actual book so I can't recommend it. I'd say get whatever is the most popular/well reviewed book so you can start learning the grammar basics and vocab. I'd make sure you at least look at vocab daily. 10 minutes of vocab a day isn't that difficult.
