Thoughts on using smiley faces in messages to other males Vol. :)

What is the consensus on this? I'm not trying to come off as homophobic or super alpha but I never understood this. I thought the only use of smiley faces was as a strategical advance in a message to a female in hopes of rubbing guts with said female. However, I've been seeing more and more guys throwing a "

" or ";" at the end of messages to other guys. Do you encounter this often?

This seems to be the case at work. I have been sent both the simple smiley as well as the emoticons from older coworkers. First time it happened it through me off lol.
