My friend bought a Rolex from a local jewelry store for $1000 old and used. Still looks

High end watches hold their value pretty well for the most part...limited runs can actually increase in value over time

Yup. Might as well buy a fake, not that I condone it.

i don't fully agree with this. it all depends on the situation. if you're looking for a discount because the product you want is out of your regular means, then i don't think it's a good idea. but if you are full well capable of buying the product at retail, it doesn't hurt to try and find a discount.

OP, if you know nothing about Rolex, why are you insisting on getting one?

Is it simply because of the name?

IMO watches are one thing that are worth spending money on. Everyone appreciates a nice watch

You fools crack me up. Why buy something for retail when you can get it cheaper? The wealthy are the cheapest most frugle buyers out there. They are always looking for a deal or to pay as little as possible. As far as buying high end watches such as a Rolex, it will be the last watch you will ever need to purchase if you maintain it. Rather spending a few bucks every year on Fossil watches and the such.

This is stupid.
Why not save some money even if you got the bread to buy 10 Rolex watches on the spot?

i think the point made by the quote is more along the lines of trying to get a discount because you can't afford it buy it straight up. that's how i interpreted it at least

C'mon people, just answer the damn question. You people commenting are probably just jealous that he's actually able to consider it. Anyways on a brand new rolex, I've read on forums that you can save about 20 % at best off retail- sometimes plus no tax, most of the time not though- and that's at authorized retail locations. I was surprised that you CAN haggle. AND I agree, the richest people are the most frugal ones out there- shopping at marshalls and clipping coupons. Nothing wrong with being smart with your money. As far as pre-owned, do your homework and know the going price of the year and model before you set out.

I'm 50/50 on this philosophy. Getting discounts on things doesn't make things less valuable. But being able to cop at full price is sweet too

Exactly, My boy got an Ipad 2 for $150, becuase his dad works at rent-a-center.. something to do with a customer didnt pay and he only had to pay the remaining balance... but a good deal is a good deal anyday.

Yeah but things like an Ipad depreciate in value. Watches and Jewelry (diamonds, gold) don't. Especially a nice time piece, those actually increase in value based on the maker (not the gaudy iced out monstrosity watches)
Now for things like ipads, xboxs, even some high end clothing.....true, shop around for a better price.

But if you are going to cop a rolex, that is looked at as in investment that will hold value.
