As many times as they went for it on 4th down, we can't convert them all. Richard is a hard running back, so I don't question him getting the ball..

I still think penalties should be able to be challenged. That Cooper TD that was reversed due to him being forced out of bounds is a critical play in the game...along with all those PI calls that happen throughout the league on a weekly basis

I'll take Richard over Murray on short yardage situations everytime. I have no issues with the personnel use their. Looked like a rough spot too we were shorted a foot on that.

Cooper TD being called back is what really change the game. That's one the refs just got wrong.

Add to that two passes getting deflected at the line for completions on crucial 3rd downs late in the game, one for a TD. As poorly as the D played fortune also just wasn't in our favor yesterday.

i couldnt have said it better myself. we just had some legitimate bad luck yesterday. hell that snead fumble was unlucky AF too. it happens. unfortunately it happens to us more often than not. that INT in the end zone was a killer too. good thing it was a PI, bc crab was nowhere near that ball.

These guys need to communicate better because this is

Bruce Irvin's reaction after he caught that ball

I wonder if this is where Irvin finally tipped and got upset about their lack of communication and players not buying in...

Not sure if thats DJ's bad or Irvin, but they both went outside and let Sanu go in

zero communication. That's unfortunate. For Matt Ryan that throw is like stealing candy from a child. Inexcusable.

about Cooper's called back TD.

When announcing the penalty, the ref said Coop "went out of bounds voluntarily." I've seen some argue that Cooper should have been eligible because he was "forced out." I've also seen others say that even though he was forced out, Cooper didn't 'immediately' return to the field of play. I don't think either of those explanations are relevant.
From RULE 8, SECTION 1 FORWARD PASS, ARTICLE 6. INELIGIBLE RECEIVERS (added emphasis):
(d) An eligible receiver who has been out of bounds prior to or during a pass, even if he has re-established himself inbounds with both feet or with any part of his body other than his hands.
Exception: If an eligible receiver is forced out of bounds by a foul by a defender, including illegal contact, defensive holding, or defensive pass interference, provided he attempts to return inbounds immediately, he will become eligible to legally touch the pass (without prior touching by another eligible receiver or defender) as soon as he re-establishes himself inbounds with both feet or with any part of his body other than his hands. See Article 8, Note 3.
Cooper was not forced out of bounds by a foul (no flag was thrown on Trufant), so the exception did not apply. Could Trufant's push have been called a foul? No.
From RULE 8, SECTION 4 LEGAL AND ILLEGAL CONTACT WITH ELIGIBLE RECEIVERS, ARTICLE 3. ILLEGAL CONTACT BEYOND FIVE-YARD ZONE (added emphasis):
Beyond the five-yard zone, if the player who receives the snap remains in the pocket with the ball, a defender cannot initiate contact with a receiver who is attempting to evade him.
At the point in time when Cooper was pushed out, Carr was out of the pocket. The push was therefore not illegal contact.
e: Also of note, new this year, an eligible receiver illegally touching a forward pass after being out of bounds and reestablishing himself inbounds was changed from a 5 yard penalty to a loss of down. So had this happened last year, it would have resulted in 3rd and 7, rather than 4th and 2.

Joseph will get his shot. Del Rio said McGill struggled and he thought Joseph should have played yesterday

Del Rio says he wants to see more playing time for rookie S Karl Joseph and LB Cory James after 2nd straight game allowing 500+ yds

Coach Del Rio says 1st round pick Karl Joseph will definitely play on Sunday against Tennessee. He says Karl has worked hard and he's ready.

If Karl can be the enforcer deep then maybe opposing OCs arent so giddy about letting their guys jog into the middle as often.

The common question coming after this game is why Richard and not Murray or Olawale on that 4th and 2...Yes we can do woulda coulda shoulda, but it seems that Richard wasn't expecting it either...

Why not use Olawale? He's been breaking through lines quite well in short yardage situations and shaking would be tacklers with ease.

It's not so much the personnel really that bothered me, yes I have confidence in our backs to do their job in short yard situations, it was that Richard wasn't expecting/expected to be out there...he himself said that after the game....there's something wrong with that. It's a LACK of communication and understanding between the sidelines and the players.

The defense has pressure initially, the opposing team adjusts and then we're in trouble. KNJ isn't effectively making adjustments and depending on having superior personnel. That doesn't work for a defense that should be, at its best and at full strength, a top ten defense, which isn't elite but just very good.

Watching the plays unfold live, Bill Musgrave may not be the best situational play caller, but he's a hell of a play designer.

I agree with this.

Wow. According to Raiders Reddit, Carr is one completion away from having best passing percentage in the AFC.

Del Rio took over the play-calling for Norton late in the 35-28 loss. Besides Norton not getting in Joseph, Del Rio acknowledged there was an issue with the sideline getting in the calls faster.

This was taken from Vic's latest piece on the changes JDR is making to the defense. This, to me, is a terrible sign for KNJ, and I think helps explain much more clearly why the defense looks so out of sorts.

Seen a couple of clips on twitter. A lot of the things JDR says seem true, these plays that they give up are all mental mistakes, dudes are not lined up properly or picking up the wrong person in coverage...we don't need them to be the 85 Bears, we just need the defense to make 1 more stop a game and I think our offense is good enough to cover the rest.

yeah, he's looking like the most disappointing move of the offseason. i was actually really excited to have him and amerson out there, since we havent had a decent corner since nnamdi, but he's looking lost. i can't believe even DJ is playing better than him. smiith has given up a big TD in each game that were pretty much uncontested :{

Sean Smith has played bad but he's been screwed by Reggie Nelson being in bad position multiple times. Most notably the Julian Jones slant for the td. Nelson was supposed to have that inside coverage, I have no idea what he was doing/thinking.

We should've expected growing pains when you have so many new starters on defense.

I feel like Sean Smith is the easy scape goat in the secondary right now, but Reggie Nelson and Keith McGill were by far the worse offenders in the secondary against the Falcons.

My biggest issue with Sean Smith through two games hasn't been his actual play in coverage, it's been his body language on two specific plays.

To me he's appeared to completely give up on two plays as they developed into TD's. When he got worked by Cooks, he starting dogging it so hard and so soon that watching it live I legit thought he'd pulled a hamstring on the play. On Julio's touchdown, he obviously gives up before Julio has even secured the catch.

He was never going to catch either player, but that's not the point. Just not the defensive principles I believe in.  Far more concerning to me than his coverage through two games.

Well, on the bright side our GM and head coach are defensive minded people. Our DC is multiple SB winning LB and we got one of the best DB's of all time in Rod Woodson on the coaching staff. These issues can be corrected on the defense...and I expect them to be corrected soon.

If we had issues on offense, I would be even more worried than I am now...
